Neo, please see panel five.
It would count if I did it on purpose.
'Tis the deed not the intention that matters.
Also they said nothing distinguishing when this is used in jokes or riddles.
Panel 5.
Hand please.

I'd do it. Even if I died, I could say I was among the first humans TO SET FOOT ON FRICKING MARS!

It's another planet people. Think about it. Even if it goes horribly, terribly wrong, it'd still be incredibly exciting.

Trying to survive in a new colony with friendly, helpful people like the settlers of old? Yes please!
Meeting alien lifefforms and losing half our numbers in the first attack, then building a fortress of martian stone and metal and using spessgunz to fight them off like a baws? Yes please!
Trying to survive in a barren wasteland with a punctured space suit, low oxygen and alien monsters running after me with the only hope of escape being to get to the emergency radio station and wait until the next supply convoy arrives, hoping that they don't bring the aliums back to Earth with them? Yes please!

Even if you die, it'll be a cool death. And, after all, isn't that what we all desire most?

I'd willingly pay $500,000 for the chance to wake up the Void Dragon. Just give me a drill and time.

Not better than waking a C'tan.

It is, actually. Humanity as it exists now stands an existent if small chance against the Mi-go (see:Cthulhutech) so long as they do not attack in sufficient quantity. The Void Dragon, on the other hand, may or may not be the force destroying the Imperium from the inside and would utterly annihilate us if awakened, or more likely make us its slaves.

That's the point: why unleash cosmic horrors if they might leave us some hope of victory. Being instantly unmade is predictable yet good, steamrolling unknowable abominations is impossible in the known future yet even better still, but everyone knows exactly how a plan with a million-to-one chance of success is going to end, especially if it is for the survival of humanity.

Well for the protagonists but badly for the collateral damage?

Precisely. Unnamed background characters are lumped in with collateral damage. Obviously the easiest way to deal with any sort of existential threat is to have every living human being introduce themselves before declaring that the odds of the threat spontaneously going *poof* are a million to one. I'd kill to live in a universe where narrative laws trumped physical ones.

It honestly depends on the style of game.

In point and clicks you are far more likely to die if you have a name.

Being the first person to die off-planet would be an honor.

Why? For a shorter trip to heavan? (Or alternatively the longest trip to hell?)

I'm sure people have died in orbit. If only because the reclusive Soviets sent people up there. I sincerely doubt they'd tell us if something went, terribly wrong.

Dying beyond earth's gravitational pull I mean. I certainly don't count people who died in orbit, sabotaged airplanes, or spy craft near the edge of space as beyond earth.

Technically speaking nothing is outside Earth's gravitational pull. All matter exerts gravity on all other matter. You are exerting gravity on me as I exert gravity on you, as an apartment building in NYC exerts gravity on a blue trout, as the ISS exerts gravity on an unnamed asteroid orbiting an unnamed star on the far side of the Andromeda Galaxy. And all of those things exert gravity on Bill Clinton.
