I agree with the comment that a moon colony is a much more useful goal. I would far prefer to do that than the Mars thing.

I think the poll results aren't really surprising; if money wasn't an object, about half of us would go to mars... and one in four board members is a Kobold.
I think a moon colony makes some sense as a stepping stone to mars... but it's not essential. I don't want to run the risk of waiting for a moonbase to work when mars is there, ready and waiting, and home to far more accessible ice and volatiles.

No... I would bet half of us wouldn't go to mars if the statement was

"If you could would you be on the first mission to mars and stay there for the rest of your life?"

Though should we test it?

Ticket to Mars for 500k? Not interested. Not because I wouldn't absolutely adore participating in the colonization of the red planet, but because I don't want to be reliant on Elon Musk or SpaceX to do it. Guess I'll just have to stop by and offer my services after I begin my career as a space pirate.

I say no. Why? Because this has the vibe of one of those things where we can afford to lose the 80k that we send off to "Mars" and, in fact, our society will function better without them.
