Waste (Not the refuse kind!)
« on: November 26, 2012, 03:17:03 pm »

For a simulation as detailed as Dwarf Fortress, I'm surprised that Toady didn't put in some system for processing waste.
I mean, human cities have sewers, right? This would also probably get gleefully obsessed over by the Science (!) community.
Indoor plumbing, fertilizer, sewage pit falls... You get the idea.
I mean really, this community is hardcore on detail right? ;D

I recall reading a few threads on this somewhere, and Toady himself mentioning it. As I recall, it's not likely to make it into the game for a few reasons, the main one being that it doesn't add much. It would also probably emit a constant miasma smell, making fortresses practically impossible.

Toady likes the idea for realism and says there is a good chance for at least animal waste to go in eventually (for fertilizer after all), but isn't ever planning on adding in sentient waste so that his game doesn't end up being:
Quote
That game with the pissing and shitting and raping dwarves
or something to that effect.

It would be brutally difficult and probably won't work. In other words, it's absolutely dwarven!

So one day my drowning trap full of waste will finally be achievable?

Can't wait for minecart shit shotguns.

And this is why Toady is reluctlant to add... "Waste" to the game.

Where is the chemistry
They tried chemistry once.
It created soap.
Dwarves lost interest in chemistry after that.

It won't be in vanilla because, well, toady don't want TOO bad PR. Same reason there is no genitalia in vanilla.

Wait for version "a lot" and possibly a bit of modding.

I'd love it personally, but I absolutely can see toady's point.

Hahahaha those wacky Euroguys can you believe they have coins for denominations above .25?! I can't even imagine why anyone would do that.

I can't remember where it was but one of the the first things I read about DF was an interview in which Toady was testing some kind of a sewer system which got a infested with hippos... But I guess having to build a working, non-miasmatic, non-overflowing waste disposal system for the dwarves would take so much work early in fortress construction that the game would be known as

Still, loving the idea of drowning goblins in a septic tank...

That's referring the sewer systems you can find in cities, which have already been added.

Here's a tip, though... Use Russian characters in your WPA5 passphrase. If your spontaneous AI is anything like my spontaneous AI (not as aggressive as yours, good conversation, but actually worse than me at chess*), it can't handle any character outside of the CODEPAGE 437 list.

*I hope. It could just be lulling me into a false sense of security.

I'm curious what the barely conscious ai wrote about.
Well that went better than expected.  He went nuts and punched a rabbit to death, then the dogs and the whole dining hall ripped him to shreds.
