Survival Succession Fort; Overseers Needed
« on: November 26, 2012, 10:58:26 am »

I couldn't find another succession fort that had these rules; so I decided to make my own.

1. The fort keeps going until all dwarves are dead. No restarts or do-overs.
2. No more than one melee soldier at any given time.

Those are the only rules so far.

Heres the site.

East side of the river:
         warm
         no trees
         moderate vegetation
         untamed wilds
         shallow metals
         deep metals
         flux stone
-----------------------------------------------------------
West side of the river:
         warm
         woodland
         moderate vegetation
         untamed wilds
         clay
         some soil
         shallow metal
         deep metals
-----------------------------------------------------------
Neighbors:
         dwarves
         humans
         goblins
         elves

Dorfing is welcome. Overseers are needed.

I believe these rules will make it hectic and epic.

I believe these rules will make it hectic and epic.

I disagree. I feel it would be boring because then everyone would just place an absurd amount of cage traps.
Is there a specific reason behind only one military dwarf in a fortress of +200?
The first rule is pretty basic for most forts, but then generally it's reclaimed.
So are you saying no reclaims?

What I mean by that is if somebody screws up we keep going and don't revert to an old save. No matter what. Until everyone is dead. As to the one soldier thing, earlier I was doing a fort like that and it was cool having one guy with all the kills. But then his wife died and he went berserk. Figured it would add something to have to keep him happy.

It's only one melee soldier. Nobody said anything about two dozen crossbows giving him a hand. Toss me on the turn list, just for fun.

Any preferences as to the site? Or additional rules?

As long as there's weapons-grade metal I could care less ;p

In the third century of recorded world history, The Pleated Ring was overflowing with criminals. A suggestion was made by the general: Rakust Morulkan. He proposed a penal colony. The King, lacking any other ideas, agreed to this. An expeditionary force, of the holy number seven, was sent to carve out a shelter for the criminal population. Unfortunately, the King had only one officer to spare for the position of warden. This officer would not arrive for many months; the expeditionary force began to entrench themselves into the earth.

Spring

1st of Granite

From the journal of Urdim Govosgusil
We have arrived. Finally. Our mission is to carve from the rocks a place to hold the outcasts of our society. On arrival I immediately set the miners to digging and our woodcutter to cutting. The farmers have begun gathering food for our stores. The stoneworker:Ral legonkubuk, complains that he has no work to occupy himself with. So I set him to work with the farmers. He seems in even fouler a mood afterwards.

Here is a crude drawing of our surroundings.

Here is the plan for the ramp to our Trading Depot.

Our miners have carved a downward staircase to explore the depths of the earth. In doing so, they have found a magma pool 28 levels below the surface. I give the command to mine a cistern and a room above it. Soon we will have forges to make weapons and trade goods. The blasted mason is still dissatisfied with the job I gave. Perhaps we already have a troublemaker here, and the King hasn't even sent the first wave of criminals migrants.

21st of Felsite

The miners finished the cistern and the room above it.

I will send the stoneworker to construct smelters. Our single iron anvil will be put to good use in a magma forge. The miners are currently working on a room to store metal ores and bars. A subterranean farm was fashioned next to the ramp. In early summer Ral will begin making a defensive wall around our position. Hopefully, then he will be content.
Our food stores should be fine until we get migrants. I only worry that we have found no cassiterite or copper ore yet. I shall send a letter of reprimand to the King for the incompetence of Able and Erib. Those two just sit around and drink all day. If its not drinking its sleeping. I'm the official expedition leader and they won't listen to me. Harsher measures are in order.
On another note the only other dwarf with any farming skill is Thob Etostmebzuth, and he is supposed to be our metalworker. Soon I will be farming alone. When we find weapons grade metals he will be off to forge masterpieces; while I work in the mud. A sad truth that the leader must provide food for the others.

You DO realize that if you get a vampire and someone walls it into a single room, this fort will NEVER, EVER DIE?

Unless it goes mad. But, yeah. I'd rather recruit him as the single melee.

Also turn please.

Summer

21st of Hematite

Those lazy miners finally decided to find some tetrahedrite. Only after I confined them to Z level -11, did they mine anything. Now if only cassiterite were as eager to be found as copper. So begins my career as the sole farmer of Rigothginet or Craftedcrews as the humans call it. Thob left me for the smelters. I grow tired of sleeping on rock and even worse: under the stars. Mistem Dodokvucar, our carpenter/woodcutter, will be told to begin production of beds, but she appears to be just as lazy as the miners. On the bright side the only thing I have to be irritated about is worker laziness.

2nd of Malachite

Maybe I do have more to be irritated about. Those lazy bastards have decided to unionize. They say I work them too hard. They say I violated their contract and that they deserve a break. THE WHOLE DAMN TIME WE'VE BEEN HERE HAS BEEN ONE HUGE BREAK. I don't even remember them having a contract. And when did they contact a union? Ablel says that the liason coming with the autumn caravan is their union representative. I'm starting to think they planned this ahead of time. I have to lock them in a room for them to actually do any work, and I'm the one in the wrong? This is proving too stressful; I won't last the year as overseer at this rate. Anyway, Mistem finished up with the wooden spears for a training room, but we were short on wood for beds. I told her to go back to cutting. Still no cassiterite and the miners have decided to mine other things (like my grand bedroom) for now. Bronze will have to wait.

16th of Malachite

Our first batch of cheap labor migrants has arrived.

     Domas Istbariton:Blacksmith
     Ilral Sanadnomal:Hunter
     Lor limulbetan:Craftsman
     Onol Orrunzuntir:Hunter
     Sodel Gidthursakzul:Mason/Metalsmith
     Tun Gikutzuntir:Furnace Operator/Mechanic

Hopefully, they won't be as lazy and stubborn as my current workforce. Every time I turn around one of the miners is either eating, drinking, sleeping, on break, or on her way to eat, sleep, drink, or take a break. That's before they're unionized. Am I the only dwarf here who values hard work? I fear the answer.

26st of Galena

The search for the illusive cassiterite continues. It is mocking me. I can here it whispering through the mountain. All but one of the magma smelters is completed. With the meager amount of hematite we brought; Thob can make more anvils. Our smelter, Bomrek Rovodgim, has been hauling tetrahedrite non-stop for months. I finally set up a stockpile next to the smelters to make it easier on her. I still haven't decided what to do about this union nonsense. Lazy ass miners have turned the new migrants against me. If we didn't need them so badly, i'd have them convicted of elf impersonation. Then they would be sentenced to the most hated job of all: hauling.

   Cassiterite how I loathe thee.
   You hide within the stone.
My hatred grows for you daily.
As I farm in the dark alone.

Until, someone makes it a noble and it has an unfortunate accident; as nobles are wont to do.

Autumn

23rd of Limestone

Our second batch of migrants has arrived
     Atir Ibrukathel: Miner/Jeweler
     Iton Sarveshgatiz: Metalsmith/Fisherman
     Muthkat Tiristrubal: Doctor/Farmer
     Thikut Agathel: Farmer

The miner is a welcome addition to our slow (lazy) and relentless (stubborn) workforce.
I have begun to hate this job. It is as if I'm managing creatures with the work ethics of children; If children were raging alcoholic brutes. Soon I shall have a large room and a bed to myself. That should ease my pain somewhat. Sadly, the lesser dwarves will have to sleep in tiny holes in the wall. It is more than they deserve, but I assume it will be a term of their union agreement. I fear soon their will be mutiny. Ablel and Erib are inciting discontent. They are stirring up trouble. For control or out of sheer slothfulness, I do not know.

But I digress here is drawing of the entrance to our home.

Here is our farm.

Here are the smelters and the forge.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Eventually I will have another forge installed. For now we will have to make do with only one. I'm sure the caravan will be disappointed in our meager selection of trade goods. But I might be more inclined to care if the liason wasn't a blasted union representative.

12th of Timber

The trading caravan arrived today. And the thrice-damned liason, may demons feast on his entrails while he yet lives, is with them. I accidentally had someone block off the wagon's entrance, so its just the pack animals this time. The hours before I meet them will be spent preparing my appearance and perfecting my angry glare for the liason. In even more depressing news we ran out of alcohol. I need my alcohol. Without it the cassiterite fiasco becomes unbearable. The mountainhomes expect us to provide weapons for them. I weep every night; for I know that when the warden gets here I will be punished for the laziness of others.

13th of Timber

Our meeting began with this.

I braced myself for the inevitable union terms, but they never came. All he talked about was some trade agreement.
When he left the meeting I was puzzled; until the uproarious laughter of every dwarf in the fort was presented before me. It was all a practical joke. I was made to look a fool. I aquiesced to their demands. THOSE DAMNED BASTARDS TRICKED ME. Someday I will have my revenge, but for now I must prepare for my retirement.

I traded some trap components for an iron bar and alcohol, blessed alcohol. The rum served to bolster my spirits. It gives me the resolve to go on; to accomplish more.
