It depends on which type of boarding pod you're going for. A fully fledged boarding vessel, or a one time use pod. Both would need rolls to pierce the armor. Though these can also be made by the boarders. For the boarding vessels, it might make sense just to go for a docking port and enter there. For those that don't a small drill system to drill through the armor migth be sufficient. As such, the boarders might have to wait some time in a vulnerable position untill they get through.
Boarding vessel:
- Fast + dodge
- Maybe a single PD missile
- Limited fuel capacity
Boarding pod
-Heavy armor
- Fast
- Near to non existant fuel. Relies on speed and armor to get through, isn't actually capable of changing course
- Does a small amount of damage to the hull when it gets through. If the damage is not enough, the boarders have to cut through on their own.
You can also add chances for the boarders to be able to get to an already damaged part of the armor.

I'm not the GM, but I'm pretty sure the ship is significantly overpowered. You got more credit that the miner, start with better weaponry, start with fighters,start with a better armor rating and start with a shield, which are rare and precious things, I'm let to believe.
Also this is quite right, no one will start with anything bigger then a shuttle or mining vessel ship-wise. As for shields, they are indeed rare as every single one is an artifact from some ancient race, they are not easy to find and a simple criminal/ex-captain/lower class
