Anyone know how upgradable an Acer Aspire z3100-u3072 is?
« on: November 25, 2012, 04:03:21 pm »

I obtained an Acer Aspire All-in-one Z3100-U3072 as an early x-mas/b-day(They're both right next to ea/ other) because my laptop broke. I've learned already, it's NOT meant for gaming. Even Dead Island with the Sniper[bna] tweak pack runs horribly. Does anyone know if the Acer Aspire has an upgrade slot so I can upgrade my CPU and/or video card? I'd take it apart now and check but it was obtained from Rent-a-Center so I'm not sure if they'd appreciate me taking it apart. And if for some reason I fuck up and it breaks, they'll be like, "Nope SOL, keep making payments though."
Oh, also, does it have extra DDR3 ram slots? I was looking at this.

Wait- one last thing: does it take normal desktop parts or does it take shitty mobile laptop parts?

Almost certainly not on the video card aspect. http://reviews.cnet.com/desktops/acer-aspire-z3100-u3072/4507-3118_7-34182739.html here are its apparent specs - no PCI slots, of course, and you wouldn't be able to fit a card in there anyway. The processor is probably upgradeable. The AMD Athlon II 170U is socket AM3 as far as I can tell, but your board might only be AM2+. If you do have an AM3 board, you might be able to upgrade to AM3+ through your bios, which would put you into a modern range of processors, but power would probably be an issue (and might actually be something to be careful about in the AM3 range). That's as far as I understand the weird world of AMD processors =P

For RAM, you probably have two regular DDR3 slots, which are both filled as stock. I have no idea what kind of weird inner workings an all-in-one machine has that you can damage, though, so you're right to be cautious.

Checking the user manual, really, would be your best option. Can probably find th'thing on acer's site, somewhere. Seems to be it. Maybe try struggling through Acer's customer support, or checking with a local tech shop or somethin'. Looking at the manual, it seems to have four two-gig DDR3 DIMM slots. The video card's integrated, so you're SOL there. I feel your pain. Looks like it might have a PCI slot for a graphics card, though...

E: Wait, wait, scratch most of that. Wrong user manual, I think.

That said, looking at the thing it doesn't look like something that's, well... terribly upgradable. Even if you can get a new cpu in there, you'd be looking at possible heating and power issues, I'd imagine. If you're looking to incrementally improve as you go along, you seriously, seriously need to get an actual desktop.

Otherwise, well! Welcome to the world of low-end gaming. May I suggest roguelikes?

As an aside, mein gott but acer's website is a steaming pile of shit. Pretty does not excuse poor functioning, damnit.

Yeah, thanks. But, welcome? I never left. Im still rockin' games like Age of Empires (Yes, the first one(Well and 2)). Whats strange is I can run Borderlands just fine, but most new games lag to hellllllllllllllllllll, with the exception of mmos. Those rarely lag, unless its a brand new fancy 3D super high graphics one. Well, looks like Im going to have to deal with this for a year and a half or so 'till I can get a job and start working on a custom build.
