The event of declaring war was the turn right after meeting them, I would suspect they can only send one such meeting per turn as it happens right at the start of the turn. They really did go from happy greet to war like that. It happens in games sometimes where an increase in difficulty can mean teams declare war on you for really no reason. If you've played Total War games you'll know about it well.

Anyhoo. UPDATE.

I am crazy... but Magnar sort of looks like he is wearing a Medieval version of a Starfleet captain uniform.

Magnar kind of tend to go to war with the speed of a blink.
Really, unless you're stronger than them they're far more likely to declare war in something like a couple of turns post having met them.

Everyone goes to war with the speed of a blink. Having a friendly neighbor is possible only if you instantly start with treaties, and only lasts if by the end of the treaty you completely overpower him.

It's not Total War type of bullshit, non-existant diplomacy, but it's close.

Aye, it is. But giving you an illusion of a working, meaningful diplomacy system, sucks.

I've never really had that problem with the AI always declaring war in the blink of an eye. Sure, they do declare war fairly often (which is a good thing, as it keeps the game interesting), but I haven't had difficulties in setting up normal, peaceful relationships, even with factions of opposing alignments.

Naw, really in the end I think it was well... compared to the AI teams our faction power level was really low so they thought of us as being really weak, not counting the fact that I've been building up my heroes. Capitar by this time has 6 cities, as opposed to our originial 2. I said I built slow.

Anyway.. Updates away!

So there we have it. Do we accept their proposal of peace, and live together in harmony, or do we grind them under our jackboot? If we've researched jackboots that is...

Wait, there's no option to make demands in exchange for peace?! Whatever happened to "Sure, we'll make peace... in exchange for the contents of your treasury, all your advanced research, and one of your border towns! And not the one under siege by a dragon, thank you very much."

I vote: make peace if and only if you think it's smarter to wage war on the Magnar instead. It sounds like they've conquered a few extra cities, so stealing a few before they become too powerful might be smart. Your screenshots suggest their faction power has been changing rapidly, from 77 up to  92, and recently back down to 90, so would this be a good time to attack?

Nah, just kill them all.

I am worried that may irreversably put us in an unstoppable lead and pretty much end the game.

Ok fine then... just beat the game, only get 50% of the way through.

May extermination proceed!
Let their kingdom crumble!
(there are still the magnar to defeat after all, and those will be tougher)

We've pretty much established that we're terrible at growing. Let's go to peace so they can build a few more cities that we can take (you shouldn't have killed those pioneers). We can explore the wildland and come back once there is more loot.
