The Walking Dead (by Telltale) (Watch out for spoilers!)
« on: November 24, 2012, 11:28:09 am »

I'm surprised there isn't a thread about this. So, what do you think? I just finished the last episode and my mind is blown into it's atoms. This game exceeded well beyond my exceptions.

For those who don't know about it, you probably came across the comic series or the tv series. If you didn't you are missing a lot. It's a game about a zombie apocalypse but it's more psychological than games like Left 4 Dead. "It's the living you need to worry about" This quote explains how things are. People fight against themselves more than they fight zombies. Since a bite is all you need to turn and zombies are attracted by noise, you mostly end up avoiding zombies or taking them out with melee weapons silently rather than going full auto with machine guns. I also never came across a machine gun in this game anyway.

If I say don't press the spoiler button I know you will so, reveal the spoiler if you can. Ha!

I also heard of another The Walking Dead game being developed that will take the tv series as canon.

Finished all five episodes, but I still think this thread needs spoiler tags to prevent the inevitable. Game really gets ruined if you know what will happen.

Yeah, I found about a character's fate in the game because of a spoiler myself. Since the story is everything, it really sucks if you know what's going to happen. That's what's stopping me from going for a second playthrough by taking all the ruthless actions.

Telltale is working on a Season 2 but they haven't told anything other than that. Maybe we will play as one of the characters who were in the group or have a new group altogether.

I am not sure I am a fan of Telltale's bitesized games. I feel like whenever I am just getting into one I am done the episode.

I beat Wallace and Gromit and Back to the Future being able to average about an hour and a half without hints.

How are these games in that respect?

It had solid writing throughout the whole series although it did fall into some typical "zombie tropes" traps. Most of the "major" plot twists I saw straight away.

Also was anyone really expecting anything else from the ending? I saw that coming from the start of chapter 1.

I was a bit upset with the final chapter though, it seemed like it had the biggest plot-holes and had some of the best and worse writing of the series.

I'm sure there's stuff I missed and I haven't really been able to eloquent my opinions all that well since I'm tired but I hope I get the general point across.

Yeah it was something I found annoying.
That said they did state the game was "tailored" to your decisions rather than it having any meaningful impact on the story. The game however has ZERO replayability. If anything I found that trying to replay the game distracted from the experience.
They should really have a warning on the splash screen that the game is really only good for one round. I suppose the most replayability you can expect out of it is "Good-guy Lee" and "Scum-bag Lee".

Does the post-credits cutscene change depending on where you told Omid/Christa to find you and where you told Clementine to look for them?

Well, yeah most of the stuff you do still doesn't matter in the end.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Still, I think decisions still do a good job at changing how the story unfolds. I don't know about you guys but if I was making this game I couldn't create a game which all these decisions we did would have a big effect on the ending. Nice use of words by Telltale. "This story is taliored by the choices you make." We all ended up with the same clothing which just had little different colors here and there.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Anyway, they still managed to pull off the illusion of decisions better than most games I played. I'm just glad there wasn't any "good" or "evil" decision. I hate it when games do that. Shades of gray is the best way to go rather than moral-o-meter that says how good or evil your "karma" is.

Despite the flaws, this game is my personal GOTY. I had to many games failing to live to their hype this year.

About the farm, as everybody else I knew something bad was going to happen in the farm. I was just expecting a bandit attack or something, not... that. The thing that happened with Vernon's group while you weren't at the house was unexpected though. Maybe a little too unrealistic. I'm assuming the Vernon's group manipulated him since Vernon didn't really seem like someone like that.

Yeah, the downside is I finished it today and while playing another game I have realized that I can't enjoy FPS games with lousy stories anymore :-\

Don't know if this is considered necro'ing the thread, but at least I used search function.

But.. Oh man, The Walking Dead..
I just finished it, and I am sure for a fact this will be my favorite game of all time. I cried like a little bitch. No other game, book, or movie was ever able to do that.
This is why I love these games, you make choices and get invested with the characters and the story, like Mass Effect, KOTOR, or certain VN's.

No game ever came close to producing the range of emotions I felt when playing this.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

10/10.

Goddamn, I don't care about what anyone says about it. In my mind, it's perfect. It really, really is. For anyone who actually wants to read my angst-ridden rambling, I'm sorry. Too busy crying about the ending.

That's similar to how I felt when I finished the game. I have never felt this much emotion with any video game and the flaws of the game doesn't cast any shadows to this.

So, we'll have to wait for Season 2. I guess. Maybe we can play as Clem's protector again :P

No.

I really, really want closure to Clem's story, but it's over.

I'd be happier not knowing, or having a vague assumption about what happens to Clem, than to have a game ruin the mystery for us. They would have a very, VERY high bar to set.

Clem lived though. That's what I think. She survived.
She better.

I taught her how.

Ogawd it was the greatest game I've played.
