Choose Your Own Adventure.
« on: November 23, 2012, 07:59:00 pm »

Here are five cards:
Cards are absolute and dictate how the plot will progress.  The plot may never have more than five cards in play at once.  Some cards will have limited uses, others may only affect other cards.  These five, however, are unrestricted in use.

You gain two cards per story page; choose wisely if you'd like to use up all your cards now.

Sometimes you may be faced with choices.  These will often have tragic consequences.™  Please note however that plot lines are independent of each other where cards are concerned.  Card changes on one line will not affect another.  However, if a plot line ends in "The End"™ then as an effect, all cards from that line are returned to the deck.

The adventure has yet to begin... please decide whether to use your cards now.

So, the order of events is:  Story written >> Suggest action >> Choose cards to play, (if any).

How about...no.

May I ask what the problem is?

Edit: I was mistaken to think you weren't playing the game, how embarrassing.

There's no problem. You asked whether to use cards yet. I said no. Don't use cards yet.

You were planning to have a 15 year old magical girl kill Witches by drinking them under the table!? It's original, at least.

Ah yes, this is also run as a democracy system.

Votes for no card use: 3 <-- winner.
Votes for card use: 2

So essentially, I have full power on how the plot starts in regards to setting, characters and style.  You'll all have 7 cards for the next step.

Chapter 1:
Scott and Smith.

After months of active duty, you arrive home.  Your boots, muddy; musket, rusty; weather, disgusting.  But all in all: you're just happy to be home.  You picture this opaque white fog as a giant blanket.  Cold on the outside, but nothing but comforting warmth on the inside.  As you reach out for the handle, something catches your eye on the ground.  Is that a potato?

Leaning over, it's shape becomes annoyingly familiar.  It's a nose, you'd recognize that nose anywhere.  Smelling alcohol drives you to action, you didn't serve your tour of duty to protect drunks.  You pull on the nose - hard!

* "Ghhnhnnnggg!"
* "Cut it out!"
* "Ah!  Welcome home, brother."
"Did you just call me a bother!?  You should thank me for waking your drunk ass up."
* "I said 'brother,' are you deaf?"
"Do I look dead to you?"
* "D-E-A-F!"

'Yes I am deaf - idiot twin' you mutter.  You only went to war for several months, least he could do is show some respect!  Having such an intoxicated twin brother is bad for your reputation, you know?  What with having the same face and all.  You're just about to give him an ear-full when a window shutter opens above with an echoing.

*BANG* "SHUT UP DOWN THERE!"

You dive for cover - unslinging your musket!

...

* Indicates your twin brother.

Use the Kill Character card.
My vote as to on whom will be determined by the vote of the next voter to vote for killing a character.

Would you give a bit more clarification of what sort of input you're expecting from players?

To me it looks like we have five hidden cards and two revealed: Kill Character and Poem. Can we turn over cards to reveal them? Is this a suggestion game where we can suggest general actions? Or is "play card X" our only valid option? Because I don't personally feel inclined to kill our brother just for drinking, and Poem doesn't look like it will have much effect on anything. But with something like  "kill somebody" being one of the first things to pop up...I'd be hesitant to play unrevealed cards not knowing what they might do. It could be bad.

If playing cards is our only option, then "play no cards" is what I would have us do. Is that really all the input players get?

Use the Kill Character card.

Really? Why? It's a get out of jail free card. Why waste it on killing a drunkard or an innocent bystander who just wants quiet when we could save it to use on somebody dangerous.

If Mecha-Godzilla-on-steroids shows up and starts trying to eat us next turn you're going to feel very silly using the "kill any character" card now just because there's nothing better to do.

Why not? I like feeling like I have control over this game I'm in.
