Would you give a bit more clarification of what sort of input you're expecting from players?

To me it looks like we have five hidden cards and two revealed: Kill Character and Poem. Can we turn over cards to reveal them? Is this a suggestion game where we can suggest general actions? Or is "play card X" our only valid option? Because I don't personally feel inclined to kill our brother just for drinking, and Poem doesn't look like it will have much effect on anything. But with something like  "kill somebody" being one of the first things to pop up...I'd be hesitant to play unrevealed cards not knowing what they might do. It could be bad.

If playing cards is our only option, then "play no cards" is what I would have us do. Is that really all the input players get?

Choose your own adventure suggestion game with cards being a "added power" also, multiple choice paths will be introduced later, allowing us to backtrack and explore other plot options as we go.

All cards are currently revealed and five are currently "Wild" cards.  I mean that in every sense of the word.  Change a characters personality, enforce a writing style, introduce an entire new character of your own design, force a monologue, create a new choice of your own preference or remove ones you don't like.  These cards will continue to affect the story until the players decide to change them with other cards - unlike the single use "green" cards.

Edit: changed game rules, felt I was restricting choice.

the five 'hidden' cards are jokers eg they can do anything like cause a fire to make a whole new planet i think as long as it one thing, no kill that guy and summon a cat with one joker card

I'll change my vote to "Use a wild card to give PC and his brothers some kind of magical superpowers."

Chapter 2.
A Song for Reunited Brothers.

Blood drains from your face as you glance rapidly for the source of gunfire.  Has war followed you to your very home?  You look up and laugh.  The window shutters to the second story washroom were opened with such force that you dove for cover instinctively.  Shutting your eyes, you offer yourself a private moment of weakness for the relief you feel.  Closing the musket pan, you return the charge back to your cartridge box on your right hip.

Hefferson, the eldest son in the family, looks down judgmentally.  Hair dripping from a recent bath.

"I'm glad you're back from duty and all, Scott.  But keep it quiet!  It's still early and my family is sleeping."
"Sorry. It's Smith..."   * "Sorry. I'm Scott..."
"Whatever. You both look the same.  When you're done saying your hellows, meet me in the backyard.  It's important."
"Woah woah woah?  I'm sure I didn't hear that right, you have a family now?  I've only been gone half a year!"

Holding your gaze, Hefferson stands stock still.  Then, with an eternity of patience, (was he trying to be tactful?)  Hefferson shut the shutters.  He just ignored the question!  Concerned about what could be so 'important' you give Scott a questioning look.  But he's too busy sighing at his shoes.  The backyard answers your curiosity and quickly puts you on the same heartsick path as Scott.

You love this family more than anything and it hurts to see your father buried before his time.  More so when you were off fighting for it.  Hefferson clears his throat awkwardly.

"Mother... wrote a eulogy..."
* "She's such a bitch..."
"His wife is a witch?!"
"Just shut up and let me read it!"

"With glee I see the old guy died,"

...
* ...

"Hold on, what the hell?  This poem better change it's tone, fast like."
"I should have proofread this before hand, sorry to have brought this to your grave, father. Sorry...
"Give me that damn parchment, father has a right to know!

"With glee I see the old guy died,
He achieved nothing in life,
I was the idiots bride."

Scott notices Hefferson glaring back at the house and smartly decides to speak up.

* "...father also had your wife write a eulogy for him on his deathbed.  He wanted us together when it was read aloud."
"Because he couldn't trust his wife to write one for him..."
  You nod in agreement.

"Flowers wilt petals scatter
Stems wither water splatters,
With my conflicted feelings put aside,
Did I love the vase or what was inside,
Our minds may shatter,
My love is what matters,
Just confide,
I will reside,
(Although I don't mean to flatter),
Inside your gray matter..."

Minutes pass in silence, everyone standing caught up in their own emotions and memories around the grave.  That solemn moment is interrupted when three gray jays land on the grave marker.  They act in an unnatural way that demands nothing less but your undivided attention.  Your fingers start sliding across your belt to your bayonet.  As your fingers reach the hilt, the birds, as one, take wing and fly peacefully towards all of you.

Chapter 3:
Reservations.

With trepidation, your eyes remain fixed on their unnatural form; gray gliding wings move from the grave marker towards you.  The mental image causes you to back up behind your brothers.  You raise your arm, pleading for time and open your mouth to ask...

"Wait..."

The word escapes your throat, desperate to buy time.  Scott and Hefferson stare eyes-wide, perplexed, as those 'birds' fly - into them - vanishing.  Their knees crumple, bodies unmoving, sprawled upon the grass.

"Damn youuu!"

The last bird is an arms length away, moments from forcing you to the same state, fear powers your arm.  Is this bird corporeal?  Is it a spirit?  You don't know, but it feared your bayonet enough to flee.  It flies downhill towards the house.  No! you can't let it escape, not there.  Not in that direction.  You unsling your musket, prime the pan, load the charge, ram, return ram rod and make ready.  However, that - creature - is so far now that the chances of avoiding another casualty were bleak.  You fire anyway, if nothing else: it will serve to alert those inside.

Without waiting to see if you hit, you kneel beside your fallen brothers.  They're alive.  Breathing deeply for the first time, you look back to your home.  Through the thick fog, two silhouettes appear.  A brown tall figure, that could be no one else but your mother and another who you assume to be your older brother's wife.  The bird flies in low towards them.

Wouldn't it be a better idea to save this card in the hypothetical situation that we find someone with amnesia and we need information about their past? I know it's a stretch, but at this point. we're just wasting the card.
