« on: November 23, 2012, 04:59:53 pm »

I got a old dell it about 7 or so years old. My parents are going to get it fixed up for me as a gaming computer, but I was wondering what would be recommended as a good gaming computer it decent right now but I need something a little more powerful. What would you recommend.

honestly if you want a gaming computer for modern gaming you are better off buying a new system especially for a 7 year old dell.

The gfx card in that pc is proper shite.  Its a bottom end card and 4GB is pointless on such a weak card.

The card is only worth about $80 so is crap value if one of the most important parts of the thing is only using 10% of the cost.

Better buying an ebay base unit with no extras and stick a better power supply and gfx card in yourself.

Or this:

Then $50 for a copy of Windows, If you dont want to "yarr" it.

Almost same specs as my pc and plays maybe 50 out of the 60 odd games i have on max settings at 1080p/4-8xAA.

If you have any interest at all in building your own PC, do that. It'll be cheaper.

I'll shell out 800 max. I don't want to buy anything off ebay or anywhere online as my first choice but what would be some good parts to use if I do upgrade mine or build my own?

Not buying online could make it very difficult to build your own or upgrade, depending on where you live.

Look up some basics on putting together pc components and you can save loads on just buying the pc parts and building it yourself. It's pretty simple to put it together and hard to screw up as long as you don't bash things together or put your fingers into the electrical socket. Definitely consider building your own pc. It's educational/fun value too.

Idk, it has 3x the gfx power and only 10% less cpu power for same price.  Seems balanced compared to that computer u listed with a new cpu, pants gfx and deathtrap 350W unbranded psu lol.

Also Ebay shops are fine, they probably sell more than any local stores do and sometimes come with 2 or 3 years warranty instead of highstreet shops 1.  Just look at the rating of the seller and see how many sales they have.  Just buy from someone with 100% rating and with 1000's of sales.

You will probably save 20-40% buying online vs some highstreet shop too.

If you live in the US in a city with a Microcenter you can get some DAMN good deals for putting together your own system.  Their CPU prices are at or lower than newegg and they always have combos with workable motherboards for as little as $10 more (and up, obviously).  Keep cruising newegg/amazon for deals on a decent power supply, hard drive and memory, the cheapest case you can stand (check reviews to make sure it will fit a long graphics card), and then use all the money left for a graphics card.  Obviously if you need a monitor or Windows factor that in.

You can put together a pretty damn beefy gaming system for $800 especially if you already have the monitor.  Example:  i5-3570k $169.99 + Asus P8Z77-V LX $69.99 at Microcenter,  $60 hard drive,  8G memory for $25-30 or so, $30-40 for whatever decent case newegg has on sale, whatever decent PS on sale - don't try to go too cheap on a PS, look at jonnyguru.com reviews.  I usually try to get a Seasonic, but newegg has an Antec Earthwatts EA-650 for $30 after rebate http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371044 which should be decent.  Or a Seasonic G 550 for $55 after rebate http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817151119.  So far $400 w/Earthwatts, leaving roughly $400 for Windows and a graphics card.  Even 7970's have been on sale for $300 after rebate recently, you could definitely step down from that and still have a pretty monster system.  Here's $330 after rebate, with a pretty decent bundle of games: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814202008
