I recall there being some sort of trick involving DFHack that could do it, however I don't uses the program so I'm not sure how far it can go!

It's a very roundabout DFHack trick.

Modding it isn't even remotely impossible.

yeah you kinda have either abusing the water and magma trick to build obsidian walls then learn to use minecarts to hop on top of the 1 tile walls.
though you end up building a obsidian house you can't mark it on the fast travel or minimap.

My idea was something like (feel free to insult me :P) a minecraft-like survival experience, only with... you know... all that absurd complexity.

like a dwarf mode only with free wandering.

well you could just switch to dwarf mode to build then switch over to adventure mode if you want to wander, Dfhack has a plugin that does this called mode set.
though you need to save the game to have Dwarf fortress to fully load up the other mode if you switch.

this was a triumph.
i'm making a note: everyone is ostile now.

ahem. Yes, i've switched but seems that now my stray dog scares my dwarves. Oh, and the dog is the only that survived when i switched from fort mode...

is there a way to fix this problem?

edit: and when i want to regain the fortress, i lose the game

Oh poo I really don't like telling folks about clicking a link to one of my threads...due to catching flack for it.
but pick and axe has a write up on how to use 'Mode set'.

oh and any caught and tamed animals will be hostile due to they still have their wild civ unchanged.
embarked tamed animals will be fine, just that they will not make it if you reenter.
oh and you need to remove resident on your units and stay on the fort if you going to switch back.
and that switching between is easy, switching between with out losing a fort is hard.
Oh and that bug where animals build up in population exist and will horribly take over your dwarves if you leave them unarmed.
wait chances of someone hitting this is highly unlikely due to the hoops they have to go through to get to here.
oh and you might want to use Dfusion to set someone as an adventurer so that when you switch you don't switch to someone random.
did you switch using arena mode or switch through esc and save? that might explain if every one gone hostile.

:D

i was using the arena metod, as explained on the wiki, but i think i made it, now.
I've switched from fort mode to adventure REALLY FAST, and only a cat was killed. if no one attack when i am in the arena mode, all is fine.

now i've returned from a quick walk outside and returned in arena mode. The other dwarves are listed as "friendly", but not part of the fortress anymore. well, i can live with that, i think.

that dang wiki is outdated I tried to updated but I guess it was overwritten
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
, you have to save into the other mode. so you kinda need to go into esc menu and switch from that spot then save the game. if you use Dfusion you could even retire your fortress and come back to it with citizens talking about their surroundings and such.
edit: no the wiki still has my contribute to it where it tells you the other way.
just that it's right next to the other option to switch.
Quote
You could also do this. You are in fort game mode, managing your fortress and paused at the esc menu. You switch to the adventure game mode, then use Dfusion to assume control of a creature and then save or retire. You just created a returnable mountain home and gained an adventurer.

I take no responsibility of anything that happens as a result of using this tool
oh.. man that's poorly worded. "YOU HAVE SWITCH TO ADVENTURE MODE >_"
