Driver updates?
« on: November 23, 2012, 01:38:29 pm »

Alright, so i want to update my ATI mobility radeon HD 5650 driver.

Any tips?

I'm asking it here, because last time i tried it, it went horribly wrong and i ended up with a mangled screen resolution. (i think it was something in the regions of 1549x867. Aka, really weird)

whats the brand name of the laptop? Most manufacturers don't update their drivers for shit and require you to live on modded drivers.

Do the stock ATI drivers not work with it?   ???  Pretty sure they do for the desktop cards anyway.

Regardless, I don't think there's a lot in the way of general tips on this sort of thing.  If the manufacturer of your laptop has updated drivers on their site, just try them out.  I haven't seen a driver update botch anything in a long time, except for the case where I had a physically damaged card.

The only other thing I can suggest is trying one of those graphics driver cleaner utilities to completely remove the existing driver before updating.  It used to be the case (and probably still is) that ATI would very strongly recommend uninstalling the current driver before updating.  I never did and it always turned out okay, and their built in uninstaller is probably perfectly fine, but it's something you can try if you want to be paranoid.

most of the time the stock drivers do not work as manufacturers tweak it for their crap, you can technically use stock but you need a modded version that will install on anything.

If I remember right, what I did to update my laptop's graphics card drivers is to switch the setting in the BIOS for graphics from switchable to dedicated, then installing the 12.1 Catalyst Drivers. Be careful, when I did this I did not know exactly how to do it and pretty much had to trial and error it till I got the solution. It was a painful 8 hours. Also my Laptop is the Acer Aspire 7745G so it might be a bit different. If you search hard enough on the internet and look for instructions that tell you to change the BIOS graphic settings from Switchable to dedicated, then those are the instructions I followed and they worked like a charm.
