Civilization [IC]
« on: November 23, 2012, 12:26:26 pm »

OOC

A meteor hits the planet. Shards of rock scatter into the atmosphere. Microbes that had infested the meteor fly across the planet's surface and spread. The microbes grow; forming tiny ecosystems. The planet changes.

Thousands of years later. Intelligent creatures have evolved. After inventing several key technologies, they begin to form civilizations. Wandering vagabonds settle down; groups merge into larger ones. Society is formed.

You are at the dawn of civilization -- how will your society evolve?

Out of the darkest cracks in the sea bottom, shelled creatures come out from hiding. Trilobite-esque creatures come out, the shards of multicolored glass punched into their shell glinting off of the blue light of some small scheelite deposits. The creatures had long wandered around the sea bottom, and have discovered many basic technologies; small tools, harvesting scheelite, punching jewels into the shell. But their best technology was one rarely used; construction. It was deemed unimportant due to the fact that food shifted constantly here. They usually used the coral to wall off standard migrations, but that rarely worked.

The most eccentric creature came out. This one glowed slightly by itself, due to some of the glowing stones punched into its shell. This wasn't very practical; it allowed their prey to see them. By glowing, it revealed a direction of movement. However, he had thought up of some technology; perhaps it was okay for him to be a little eccentric.

He spoke. To a human, this would sound like vaguely crab like unintelligible noise. To a zocl, however, it was their language. A frothing symphony, which would be translated to this: "Wandering has gone on for long enough. It is not nearly easy enough, and many of us die every year. I declare this land our new home. Those who wish to leave, can. However, I have discovered a way to keep our food source constant: luring our prey with some of our previous catches."

Several of them left immediately, of course. This was a pretty new construct for them; they've wandered their entire lives. But several of them stayed, and the group began to plan. The first order of business was how to organize the city, and who would lead.

The deserts of the land were once barren. Once abandoned.

Until they came.

They arose from the deserts, gaining their knowledge, their skill, everything.

And they became.

They rose from the sands. Tall, green, woody humanoids, with spines growing everywhere on their bodies, flowers growing on their heads and holes from mouths and eyes.

They called themselves Arl'Ari. People of the Sands. A human would name them the Cactisapien, the Intelligent Cacti, for that was their form.

They wandered around, hunting and foraging, never knowing true rest.... until now.

Tiring of eternal journeying, the Cactisapien divided into two factions. The Do'Ari, People of the Staying, and Sa'Ari, People of the Moving. The Do'Ari settled at last on the foot of the great mountain they named Ari'Lona, Watcher of the People, and founded at last a settlement.

The Sa'Ari vanished into the sands, vowing to return with stories for their people.

They named it Sah'Arl'Ari, Home of the People of the Sands.

The Squamatae Volans,wh ich is not what they called themselves, but merely a basic description, have inhabited the mountains for a long time.

Each year they made the dangerous treck through the mountain passes, in order to follow the changing winds. Each year, the weak and sick, but old and younglings are culled by dangerous winds, food shortages and harsh storms. Their death would be mourned later, but this never ending cycle of life and death always continued, around which their whole primitive culture was born.

That was the case, untill someone made a difference. It's unknown what caused this change in behaviour, but one year a small group decide to break away from the traditional pattern, and thanks to mutual aid their elders, albeit old and sick managed too survive. These elders were however to weak to continue the journey in the second migration, and as such, they remained in the central mountain range.

Over time, this habbit spread and a small elderly population gathered on that location. Their knowledge was great, but their reputation greater. They were attributed quasimagical powers, for if they had met death, and had overcome him. As such, they were no longer part of the cycle, but had transcended it, becoming something greater than a normal person.

Forge from great mountains itself, the Silicoids a geode race. These beings can withstand the great heat that came with living inside a fire mountain. This race has faced many hardships when growing into society from leaderships changes to the mountain shacking in anger from their misdeeds. Eventually, gaining enough understanding of their environment they were finally able to make a permanent settlement calling it Mica.

Twenty sleep cycles later the tribal's social organization had made great progress. The nation was almost ready to actually do anything other than grow a little. The nomadic groups have begun to rip off the organization of the tribe. A few of them migrated, but most of them were stealing the organization: those who are the best at situations rule during them, but are normal members when not. Those who are designated leaders are given scheelite shards; otherwise the jewelry traditions just reflect how prosperous they are. It has been decided since before society that jewelry is the de facto standard for trade, meaning that it quite literally reflects their prosperity.

In other progress done, walls have been built around Oth-Si. They are a simple huge mass of coral, but it is quite an engineering feat. Now that the village's boundaries have been set up, the other buildings can be set up. For instance, homes rather than using the cracks. It has been decided that the town center will be a huge geyser of steam, which heats the area somewhat.

A wartime leader has been decided; Tetuli prove herself worthy of governing in time of war by fighting in the only huge battle ever fought in prehistory, marked by her large scar. Her eye, in case others get scars like hers, is a dark shade of purple.

The Arl'Ari, meanwhile, in the same period, have built up Sah'Arl'Ari into a working town.

The Sa'Ari have built up Sah'Arl'Ari into a real settlement, completing the stables and starting on the walls of the settlement, while the Do'Ari continue wandering.

The Sa'Ari have appointed a Liason to communicate between the Do and Sa'Ari, in Sa'Daro, a person who agrees with both the Do and Sa'Ari's philosophies.

The Sa'Ari continue working in their town.

Settlement of Mica is going strong, so far there is no incidents have happened yet. But the lack of organization of ideas for expansion is concerning. However, the miners have came across some strange new rocks, one that is black and the other is red.

Cycles in the future, but not many...

A drifting pilgrim stalks the Oth-Wa; the undervents. There isn't any natural light; only the incredibly faint glow of stolen scheelite allows one to see at all. Even then, you can only see large, shifting movements. There is no way to really see in these caverns -- but one can hear, and detect currents from the vast network of geothermal vents. The undervents have incredibly fast travel, but the risks are humongous. Only microbes can safely navigate this, and a few incredibly dangerous creatures.

The pilgrim turns right and is swept away by a current, further into the undervents.

In Oth-Si, the final leader has been chosen; the cold wartime chieftain. Tesserec is an age cycle younger, but experienced through several years of planning for constant attacks. The city founded a small militia, consisting of the chieftains and two other people. The zocl tribe was finally ready to expand, grow, and explore.

A change has finally come, democracy. Every being within their race can now have a say within their politics. No longer will a few ruling elite will be able govern how the other lives now, The Rise of Democracy has come.

The stockpiling of the new rocks for future observation is currently happening. With the new political system the race is finally able to organize itself and now planning can be done more efficiently. Reports of different type of light source beside lava is being spotted on the upper levels of the settlement.

The Sa'Ari finally integrate into a clannish system of government. For the moment, their clans are small and more family sized....but eventually they will grow.

They begin building internal structures for their tents, tiring of having to put them up after they blow down repeatedly in the harsh winds.

The tribes have always had a tradition of telling stories to each other, but as they were passed on rapidly between generatiobs, these stories degraded quickly, changing completely over the duration of a single season. However, due to the founding of the Elder Council, the pack now had a living memory, capable of preserving the stories, and teaching them to the Younglings, and those who came after them.

Most early tales were those about the hunt, but as the social structure of pack evolved to encompass the council, so did the tales. Tales of leaders, heroes and even the origins of things started to spring up. Meanwhile, the weather is becoming worse, and it's likely a storm is brewing, which will soon descend upon the main land. Hidings places are searched, but they are few and far between.
