Looks very cow-clicker esque at the moment. Worrying, not unhappy I didn't back this.

But I never played the original populous so I can't compare anyway and it didn't tickle my nostalgia bone when all I know of Populous is the playing the meh "Populous: The Beginning" game back on the PS1.

Honestly to me populous is one of those games that everyone fondly remembers but isn't really as good as people remember it as.

What a coincidence that Populous in a different skin isn't as popular.

I don't recall Populous being a mobile game with mandatory click-collection-time wasting, chatrooms, a cash shop or random, unnecessary instanced MP battles.

But nice try.

So other then that the game is amazing? I somehow doubt that.

I think those elements give it an excuse as to "why it isn't so good" but honestly without them, it would probably still get "meh"

Isn't there some random thread your rampant contrariness would be better put to use?

Anyhow that is besides the point. All I am saying is that Godus wasn't going to be a "great" game either way. I don't really want to say anything more, or more meaningful, about Godus.

Mind you if I were to say anything more meaningful it is that I am disappointed that of everything Peter could do with untold development power... he remade Populous. Which is fine I guess people like populous, but he didn't even do a particular good job at that either.

Godus has a cash shop?  Time to take that off my buy list!

Oddly enough I consider that ENTIRELY fair. Games that have a cash shop tend to nag you to buy their rip off products.

It is why I avoid free to plays like the plague.

Well considering the later ages are disabled and don't work...why/how is the primitive age taking so long a problem? If anything it lets people thoroughly test it out before hitting the beta wall of no more content...

Hardly makes sense to make the 10% of the functional game to be really quick when the other 90% doesn't even work yet...if they did that everyone would bitch for more content cause it was too fast and there is nothing to do...I never get people that makes gripes like this in Betas.
The bronze and iron ages are enabled but incomplete. It takes around 20 hours to get there judging by reports on the backer forums. If they genuinely wanted players to test the game, they would make content easier to access, not harder. As it is, players on the forum are quitting the game because it is too tedious and boring, and/or because they are having wrist problems after all the clicking.

The loading screen for the game claims it is 40% complete, so players are expecting 40% of the game.

As for the cash shop, that was apparently removed at the end of alpha after a fit of rage from the testers on the forum. Gems can still be earned in game, but won't be purchasable with real currency.

Just going to bold, size it up and make it louder cause clearly people still miss this information a few pages ago...

Apparently the mobile version will still have a cash shop and as far as I know apart from that it will be exactly the same game. This raises a lot of concerns. Cash shop or not you've still got a game that's design to be awfully slow, tedious and built around skinner box mechanics.
It's just bad anti-consumer design that has plagued mobile gaming and pretty much destroyed it as a legitimate gaming platform.

An update has been released:

1.3 New and Improved Features

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

1.3 Bug Fixes
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The short of it is they removed the amount of clicking in the early phase by removing faith generation from the lowest level of house, so you have to turn your starting position into a barren sandbar in order to expand. There are some nice minor things, like house range indication and maximum population indication, but flattening land is still tedious, houses still can't be upgraded or easily torn down, and you still have to wait for faith to generate after stripping the land bare, and there's just nothing interesting to do for the first few hours. It does seem to move a bit faster, at least.

There's supposed to be a weather system and farming now, but you still have to slog through a bunch of monotonous crap to get to any of it.

Also totems are massively nerfed - it only attracts a handful of followers now, and they'll typically go ahead and "explore" when they get to the totem rather than stay transfixed by it.  Means you can't use it to suck up all the followers to stop them laying down size 1 houses when you're uprooting a settlement with the intent to upgrade it to new, bigger homes.  Or sending them en masse to populate a new area, for that matter.

I think some of that may be down to a bug, but from what I understand the intent is to let you upgrade the totem's capacity as you advance, so it starts out crappy and small (in keeping with the "advancing lets you reduce the tedium" design decision).

This. I actually have no problems with either f2p or even cash shops in games. What I do have a problem with is terrible design inspired by them. In general, these go along the lines of: get them hooked on the gameplay, then take it away, telling them they can come back later or pay money now. The problem isn't the f2p or cash shops, it's the fact that they run on the same psychological tricks as Cookie Clicker; of showing numbers increasing, and telling you to make them increase faster by doing things, without any real purpose or reason, while artificially expanding game time by increasing the cost of 'doing things' faster than doing them increases the numbers. It isn't gameplay which is meant to be fun, it's gameplay meant to waste as much of your time as possible by using psychology to trick you into continuing wasting time.

Oh, and I do have to agree somewhat with Neonivek. Populous was probably great when it came out. But quite frankly, the industry has moved on. It would take a ton of innovation to bring it up to modern standards. If you wanted a good Populous descendant, you would look at From Dust, and build from that as a starting point.
