So by the sounds of it, in this game, you play as Peter Molyneux.

To wit:
You go around, gathering enough belief, and when you get enough, you can make something flat and featureless.

Sigged, Genius.

They've released an update, albeit a weak one that does nothing for the grindy clickfest of the early game. Then again, "beta" was only released on Friday.
Quote
Beta Update v1.2.1 released on 17th September, 2013;
  • Followers will now build past 2000+ Followers
  • Multi-clicking on Gem bug removed
  • Multiple Steam profiles and saves now supported
  • Rubble takes fewer clicks to clear (2 instead of 5)
  • List of resolutions updated in options menu
  • Fixed 0x0 resolution bug
  • Removed debug editor option from F8
  • Raised limit on placement of settlements to 10
  • Fixed bug where settlements stop working after save/load
  • Speed of followers to Totem increased by 10%
  • Re-balanced the birth rate of rank 4-6 Abodes
  • Graphical improvements to the battle map screen
  • Shaders corrected on trees – beautify now more beautiful
  • Contours shadows added on Landscape
  • Abodes now only eject 1 follower at a time
  • Less tripping of Followers animation
  • Improved water surface
  • Improved follower terrain response
  • State of the Gem mine now saves
  • Rebalancing of Gems in the mine
  • Preparing the world for Bronze age farming
  • Various icon revisions
  • Various text updates
  • Various crash fixes

Edit: Turns out the game has to phone home to a central server before it will launch. And the patch broke something to do with that so now no one can play until they fix the fix. So many things to be indignant about.

I feel bad for Molyneux, I used to look at Fable (the original) and be totally transported to another world...
...now, he's reduced himself to a remake. What happened to all that Molyneux Magic? Where did it go?

Lol Molyneux magic? That man has been in his own world for a long time, i was afraid of his ideas moving Fable completely under Kinect.

Really? Another phone-home problem? Did they learn nothing from Sim City?

But, didn't they explicitly said the single player wont need a connection?

Digging......

"the answer is simple; you will be able to play the singleplayer experience of Godus without needing to go online; you can play it while on a plane or when you're in a cave. No internet connection required to play the game in singleplayer."

So, does it require a phone-home on every launch?

Edit:
Yeah, so another Digging. it only require connecting with their servers so they could gather data on how people play. not sure if that "connecting to server necessity" will maybe just stay after they had finished gathering all that data though.

somehow from looking at a video of this the settlements feel "lifeless" ? and settlements are kind of the primary point of the game.
i mean the only real time people walk around is when you kick them out and they go find a new place to build something or?
they could have done so much more with the towns/houses/people... i.e. even black and white 1/2 had way more "life" in the towns with people doing stuff. i.e. farming.
it sounds great to be able to go through a ton of ages... but if all ages are pretty much just "get different styled houses/weapons" and the rest is as lifeless as the stone age or so where everyone either sits in the house or get thrown out to build a new house... meh...

i.e. look at the games "black and white", "the settlers", "tropico" or "anno", there is a ton of stuff they could have done to make the towns feel more lively. like early they might build a hunters hut and that randomly spawns animals to hunt around the area and people go out and hunt them and create belief when they get back (instead of just sitting in the house forever) or you get more belief if you manage to grow forests nearby so more animals spawn.
or they go out and gather berries from bushes... or a miner "plinking" away at rocks or iron ore in the mountain... or a woodcutter that goes out and chops some wood and generates belief when he comes back to his hut and more belief if the next forest is nearby and has a lot of trees.

there doesnt even need to be a resource system like in anno where they produce wood to build other stuff... they all could just create more belief if you as god terraform the land into their favor and not just into barren flat plateaus with houses everywhere and everyone in their houses to "build belief".

or later they might build little farms (think of how "the settlers" game grows fields around the building a bit) and if there is enough space they might build fields for wheat and then maybe they build windmills and a bakery... or if the farm has no space for fields maybe they create pigs or goats then and lead the goats to a nearby mountain to feed... and that spawns a butchers house later. maybe a bit like "godus" does it where one building influences the next. i.e. a hunters hut near a forest might be a hunter hunting deer... near a lake or coast it might be a fisher or in the mountains a sheepherder.
or rare "resources"... i.e. if horses are around your farm they might tame the horses instead of pigs and give you different combat troops i.e. instead of a swordsmen a guy on a horse who just has +1 speed or so.
but no need for a resource system... just some more randomly generated buildings for the town people to do something with to make the towns feel alive.
or even later maybe roads between towns and merchant wagons or cars drive around.
or churches and priests walking around generating more belief once the priests go to houses or peopel go to the church or hospitals where injured people go to (from wars or disasters) or a firefighter house with people running around when fire breaks out.

well i guess it would require a ton more "art" and "animations" to do this...

i dont know... its still kind of early in development and who knows what else they add to it... it just feels the general gameplay will stay and there wont be that much different from now to release... basically a land flatten-er and belief clicker or so...
where on the other hand they could go more "godly to support your towns" (i.e. create space for farm fields, grow forest near woodcutters, maybe a godpower that lets you move a animal herd to another point so your town can do something with i.e. teh horses or deer they normaly couldnt get to and creating belief because you helped them get more animals or so. on the other hand you might can lure a tiger herd to a enemy town.) and not just "flatten everything".

The lifelessness slowly starts to go away as you climb the tech tree. With Settlements, ugly angular roads will form to connect houses to their settlement center, and people will walk around idly (without dying). With Mining, people can be sent to mine gems (provided you've found the gem vein). Architecture suggests some sort of resource/needs management component will come to the game, and the latest patch notes said they've started working on Farming for the bronze age. The problem is it takes so long to get to these. You'll have hours and hours of land flattening, chest digging, and possibly multiplayer farming just to get the cards necessary to unlock the techs.

The whole thing vaguely reminds me of those "DLC Quest" style games on Kongregate, where you have to play the game to unlock features that feel like they should've been present from the start, only with a lot more grind and none of the humor. Yes, the game is in "beta", but it also had an "alpha" where they should've identified that the time it takes to advance up the tech tree is ludicrous and requires far too much clicking. Instead, they chose to keep working on content for the later parts of the game without acknowledging all the complaints about how horrifically long and stale the primitive age is.

Well considering the later ages are disabled and don't work...why/how is the primitive age taking so long a problem? If anything it lets people thoroughly test it out before hitting the beta wall of no more content...

Hardly makes sense to make the 10% of the functional game to be really quick when the other 90% doesn't even work yet...if they did that everyone would bitch for more content cause it was too fast and there is nothing to do...I never get people that makes gripes like this in Betas.

And wtf is with the new thread title? This is not populous...this is Godus...he is not messing populous up...the new title simply invites undue hate on an unfinished game...just cause you don't like something in beta doesn't mean you have to go full retard with ignorant hate and ruin a (at one point) neutral thread...

From the Kickstarter page:
Quote
GODUS is an innovative reinvention of Populous, the original god game and delivers exciting global co-operation, competition, creation and destruction to a whole new generation.

...

Populous was created over 22 years ago, and we believe that to date, nothing has come close to emulating its powerfully godlike experience. It’s this experience we aim to reimagine. GODUS blends the power, growth and scope of Populous with the detailed construction and multiplayer excitement of Dungeon Keeper and the intuitive interface and technical innovation of Black & White. The original Populous hailed from the 8-bit era but GODUS will use the most modern technology the world has to offer.
(my emphases)

It's undesirable to start accusing people of "go[ing] full retard" when you appear not to have even read the Kickstarter you're defending.  This was quite evidently intended to cash in on people's nostalgia for "the original Populous", and it's the failure of this endeavour that people are commenting on.  It's not hate of the game itself, per se, it's hate of the cynical "they'll buy anything as long as we mention Populous, it doesn't even have to be anything like it!" approach.

Edit: addition.

Honestly to me populous is one of those games that everyone fondly remembers but isn't really as good as people remember it as.

What a coincidence that Populous in a different skin isn't as popular.

I don't recall Populous being a mobile game with mandatory click-collection-time wasting, chatrooms, a cash shop or random, unnecessary instanced MP battles.

But nice try.
