Well it looks like Ol' Pete's Kickstarter is winding down. At ~$120,000 short and 4 days to go, it's unlikely (but not impossible) for this one to meet funding. He could always resubmit a Kickstarter for Populous, maybe with a smaller funded goal, a tighter design document and more of his prototype fleshed out.

I dunno about that, Maia's funding almost doubled in the last 4 days.  Besides, there are probably a lot of people wavering on this one who will chip in towards the end.

Maia got a massive bump by TotalBiscuit making a video on it. Dude has sway. Odds of this happening with Godus are...not so high.

Molyneux made a visit to Yogscast's donate-a-thon livestream. But with them also getting donations, I doubt the fans would have much money left over to give to him.

HEURG THIS NEEDS MORE MONEY

It's going to be a smartphone game, you realize? And any game that cross-platforms into smartphones isn't going to unlock a tenth of the potential of a true PC game. Peter needs to come back at PC users with a serious vision for this thing. The graphics, for a start, are decidedly reminiscient of angry birds and every other shallow smartphone gamelet.

Smartphones really are a lot more powerful than a lot of people seem to think.

The Samsung Galaxy Note II has a 1.6 GHz quad-core processor, 720p resolution display, 2 GB of RAM, and storage capacity up to 128 GB.  That's about on par with the PC I had about four years ago.  I played some pretty damn good games on that PC.

Not that I have an abundance of faith in this project, I just haven't completely written it off yet.  He's not getting any of my money until I can see where this is going though.

Shiny numbers.
But for the same reason there's still a gap between laptops and desktop computers, there will always be a difference. Video card, actual processing speed and so on.

Fair point, but that's not the only smartphone out there. The iPhone 4S has only a 1 GHz dual-core processor and 512M of RAM. A game designed for smartphones won't cater only to the latest models. The whole concept of tapping into smartphone markets appears to be cashing in big to a wide and fairly casual audience... That's the worry.

This is consistent with standard Molyneux, who has traded off earlier and more complex titles to make more casual recent titles. That's the real complaint, I think, of many gamers recently. In the Kickstarter video, it implies that Molyneux usually fails due to grand visionary overreach, but that's a bit misleading. It's not that he couldn't achieve any of his ambitions, but that for example, he saw streamlining Black and White 2 into a standard RTS would help him unlock a larger market. His commitment to supporting mobiles just foreshadows that a broad-based appeal is being sought through streamlined and accessible gameplay. That's okay, too, but there are many funding options other than Kickstarter open for that vision.

I suppose I more or less wrote it off when it had Molyneux's name, then smartphone support was simply confirmation.

See, I still think that the vast majority of his games have ranged from good to excellent.  They're just not the games he talks about at the start.

No. Look at Moleyneux's track record. While he was with Bullfrog, being published by EA, his games were fantastic. Pioneers of genres. Dungeon Keeper, Populous, Magic Carpet, and so on.

Then look at his games from Lionhead, published by Microsoft. Fable I, II & III and.. *shudder* the journey. If you ask me, it was a case of his publisher being far too restrictive on what he could and couldn't do in terms of what was a "safe" bet for a game that would make lots of money as opposed to actually being a good game.
Moleyneux to me is a visionary, he has these grand intentions for games but for the last several years he's been reigned in by Microsoft's creative restrictions. Case in point: While he was at Lionhead, Black and White 1&2 were released, published by EA. They were fantastic. The stuff published under MS? Not so much.

Now that he's with 22cans and completely publisher free and in full creative control of what happens, I think his games could be better than ever. It's just such a shame that people took his optimism while shackled under MS as false promises and now don't believe a word he says.
That said, with his reputation as it is, misguided or not, Godus is likely his last chance to prove he can still make amazing games. I really, really hope it gets funded because of this.

Well you'll probably get your wish.

£441,258 as of right now. If he managed to make this much in the last few hours, I don't doubt he can get the last $9k.
