That's a huge double post. How long do you reckon it'll take until our new colonies are up and running, with shipyard to extand our range? Aren't you afraid of the Klingon ships over Mintaka? Are we going to face the rest of the Galaxy as soon as the Cardassians fell?

The Outpost is almost certainly done for, but if they take down the lightly armored transports before we can kill them, we’ll have to postpone the invasion. We’ve decloaked all our ships before the battle, so hopefully the outpost commander will target anything else other than the transports.

News of the defeat is overwhelmed by the victories against the Federation, with almost no airtime devoted to the Ferengi threat. However, some popular editorials criticize the betrayal of the Federation, calling it a stain on Romulan honor. But honor is for the Klingons; we Romulans value pragmatism above all else.

The defenses on Minos Korva are stronger since last turn – the Federation powered up the planetary shields over both planets in the system. This decreases the effectiveness of planetary bombardment, and since our troops in space are already disadvantaged against the Federation’s ground forces (180 to 202 in ground combat strength), I elect to postpone the invasion for a turn while the other ships take down the orbital batteries and planetary shields. If we fail this invasion, we can’t bring in extra troops from elsewhere, so discretion is the order of the day here. Otar is still being invaded this turn, though.

To the south, I decloak the fleets over Ariannus and Blue Horizon in preparation for their planetary bombardments next turn, and order in the troop transports so we can invade the turn after. The uncertainty here is the Federation’s final fleet over Sarona – 6 Light Cruiser IIs and 8 assorted smaller vessels. These lighter ships can move at 2 sectors per turn, fast enough to intercept and force the inbound troop transports at Blue Horizon into a space battle. We will be able to defeat them, but they still threaten our vulnerable transports. The Second Fleet is ordered toward Sarona, hopefully catching the slower Light Cruiser IIs halfway.

We also get a breakthrough in Propulsion tech. This extends the range of our long-range ships (only scouts) by 1 sector. As we have level 5 in all tech fields, we get improved laboratories, intel centers, and some special structures. The Singularity Plant would have been a great boon to us 50 turns ago, as it provides +2 dilithium for the hefty cost of 800(!) energy. As we’re currently in a recession and unable to build any more ships, it isn’t useful for now. The Naval Academy is our version of the Zakdorn Academy, only available in Romulus and providing +1 morale as well.

Now that we’re at tech level 5, we have 2 research targets to pick from, both concerning defense. We can go for the D’deridex Warbird, a short-range command ship, or the Romulan Starbase. The Starbase is cheaper, more heavily armed and shielded, but it is immobile, whereas Warbirds can be shifted around our key systems to counter the enemy.

The Federation cruisers diverted north, possibly to rescue the besieged system of Minos Korva. The failed invasion of Ariannus cost us two troop transports and the scout there, but we destroyed the orbital battery. The Strike Fleet’s ships are all still intact, and they will continue bombing the system.

Force 2, involved in the successful invasion of Blue Horizon, lost its scout to the orbital battery. It’s replaced by the RNS Dark Raptor, which was originally for the battery. In the north, Force 1 at Minos Korva cloaks in preparation for the Federation cruisers, and the 2 leftover troop transports get to work building an outpost.

Force 2 and the leftover troop transport at Blue Horizon will proceed over to Ariannus to help the Strike Fleet with bombing.

The two Scouts at Otar will head on over to investigate the unknown star, as suggested by Captain Haspen. The extra range allows Second Fleet to continue pursuing the Federation cruisers (now lessened to 4, as 2 others split off to north of Sarona).

The Federation cruisers look to be threatening ours at Ariannus, where Force 2 just starting bombing. I’m confident that Force 2 and Strike Fleet, even uncloaked, will be able to handle them, so I send Second Fleet on to Canopus to strike the outpost there.

In the meantime, I just noticed this – a sizable Klingon Fleet over Cardassia. It includes 2 of their assault transports, making it an invasion fleet. Cardassia has also been bombed, reducing their population and severely damaging the orbital battery defenses.

But that’s a whole lot of Klingon ships around Cardassia. Ten Battle Cruiser IIs and 5 Destroyers in all. The Cardassians seem to be losing badly – Cardassia has been in for another round of Klingon bombing. They’ve not yet lost, with a force of 10 cruisers in the south, but we’ll pass on helping the Cardassians for now.

Shipyards will probably be built within 20 turns or so, but it takes about a hundred turns for the 'conquered' morale penalty to wear off. The Klingons only have 2 troop transports, and since we're not (officially) at war, we'll get at least one turn's warning before they can invade. And yes, by the time the Federation falls, the Klingons will likely swallow up the Cardassians, leaving the galaxy split between us and them. The Ferengi are quite inconsequential at the moment, they've only got two serious systems (Malcor and Yridia).

I'd suggest you colonize Sol and quickly purchase Charge Collectors, a Dilithium Refinery, and Advanced Replicators. That'll jump-start the system and allow you to open Zakdorn to fleet production.

What's the status of the Borg? Did they go home or are they just out of sensor range?

Also, I'd take the Second Fleet into Cardassian/Klingon territory and see if I could catch small groups of Klingon ships alone. Just 4 or 5 heavily one-sided engagements in your favor with cloaked ships will seriously reduce the red menace.

I seem to be falling victim to a bug here – I keep trying to buy these charge collectors, and despite the fact that I have sufficient credits, the purchase doesn’t go through. Guess the humans will have to starve for a bit while I try to get around this.

The Listening Post at Mintaka reports that the Klingon have added a force of 3 Scout IIs (which have cloaking devices) to the forces we saw last turn over Cardassia. To the southeast, another Klingon Battle Cruiser II escorts their troop transport for the invasion. The Cardassian fleet, 16 ships including 10 cruisers, does nothing at the Kholfa outpost. It looks as if they’re going to abandon Cardassia itself, but surely they know the Klingons will come for them next.

I set the Strike Fleet and Force 2 to meet up northwest of Cardassia. With 7 ships total, I’m loathe to send them in against the Klingon fleet, so they’ll just roam the area and try to pick off lone Klingon vessels. It might have been better to send the Second Fleet here to get enough firepower to squash the Klingon invasion, but we need that firepower to support the invasion of Tama, especially as we don’t have enough troop transports to ensure ground superiority. The Empire is spread thin.

Also the Klingons, for some unknowable reason, back away from the invasion of Cardassia. I have no idea why, given that they can easily win this invasion. Cardassia hasn’t gotten away unscathed though, it’s at 55/400 population and I doubt they’ll be building any more ships.

Speaking of invasions, our troops in Tama are given the order. The Tamarians have great superiority in ground forces, but our advantage in orbital bombardment should be enough to pull this off.

At least we put a dent in the population, though. Force 1 and the Second Fleet will continue to bombard the system to take those planetary shields offline. The Federation has launched another Galaxy-class cruiser, but it can’t win against our overwhelming forces. In the meantime, I’ll shuttle up more troop transports for another try (one just finished building at Romulus).

Also, note that Antede has leapt up to 230 (max) population from 170 the turn before, and now boasts 11(!) orbital batteries. We probably won’t be conquering them anytime soon.

In happier news, I finally got the purchase of the replicators at Ariannus to go through. Now to buy the charge collectors and end this farce.

Oh shit, there’s the Klingons in the south – 9 battlecruisers, 1 destroyer, and 1 troop transport total. If they go for Ekos we’re screwed, we don’t have orbital batteries there and don’t have the ground combat strength to fend them off. Hopefully they got for Kholfa instead. Force 2 and the Strike Fleet will head for them, but I stupidly split them up to catch the stragglers around Cardassia.

There’s no telling what they could do next, but I guess they’ll head home to pick up a new transport. Force 2 and the Strike Fleet are set to meet at Vadris.

In the southeast, no sign of the Klingons. This is annoying – despite the Listening Post at Mintaka, the X-ray Pulsar is disrupting our scans in the region around it. I’m sure there’s an outpost at the unknown red star, as it was witnessed by our scout fleet. Presumably the Klingon fleet is there.

In the southeast, still no sign of the Klingons. I set our forces to retreat a little toward Cardassian space. Note that our scan strength in that orange star system has fallen even further due to the effects of the X-ray Pulsar.

To Ivan: I already played through part of the update when I saw your post. I suppose rush-colonising Sol would have been the better course of action than banging my head against the Tamarian wall, but hey, it (eventually) worked. Zakdorn is doing a factory upgrade, so it'll be Ekos producing ships for the nonce. Also, I'm 99% sure the Borg are dead, we wiped out their 2 cubes and haven't seen another yet.

Regarding the tactical situation, it's frustrating, to say the least. The Klingon ships can move 2 sectors per turn to our 1, so they're running rings around Force 2 and Strike Fleet. There's also the stupid pulsar, blinding us and our range limiting how far we can strike into Klingon space. I doubt sending in the Second Fleet would have done much good in this update.

It's still good that you dealt with Tama, if the Federation doesn't have any other systems with dilithium then you should just kill that Command Cruiser II and sign a peace agreement. Without any dilithium they should be impotent now, or does the game simply cheat dilithium for the AI when you're playing on impossible?

As a suggestion, hovering over the icon for your troop transports will show their ground attack rating. That will help figure out if an invasion will succeed. Also, you'll have a lot more success with invasions if you let your fleet bombard the system for a turn before you send in the troop transports. The AI automatically tries to knock out any existing orbital batteries before it destroys structures or population. Since each operational battery gives +50 ground defense then taking the extra turn to knock them out can make invasions a lot easier.

In terms of the Klingons, I've sometimes just taken my best guess and randomly sent fleets around enemy territory to hunt down enemy ships. As long as you can avoid the cloaked scout ships then you can possibly get lucky.

Finally, I've run into the buy-structure glitch myself. My best suggestion is to queue up the thing you want, then add trade goods to the end of the list, then buy the item. If you've got anything else in the list, or if you don't have trade goods then it can be fiddly to buy things, but one at a time like that has been successful for me.
