Valerian was born out of wedlock from a passing Woodelf adventurer father and a farming hand mother. Growing more slowly than the other children he had to put up with being little, hiding his ears from most with hats that he always wore. Even having to fake sickness to amount to how thin he always was. Always thinking ahead, but usually missing things in the present.
But as he matured it became impossible to hide his mixed heritage. Rather than stick around where many of his friends and mother had grown old and many died, Valerian left to find his own way. Finding a place to learn to become a great wizard. He wanted to bring magic back to the farm and honor his mothers memory by making the lives of his family easier.
For this he knew he would need money, and adventurering not only tested his skills but let him use his time researching and learning to fund expeditions. To learn of the past and the present world.
A gift from his master, as Valerian was opt to be thinking of something so much that he would miss stairs or walk off unmarked areas, and such forget his way. This pair of apprentice robes has saved him injury more than once. Also his staff when not connected to the ground reminds him to look about as if blind.
Robe of Feather Fall: This armor protects its wearer by automatic activation of a feather fall if the individual falls 5’ or more. (see feather fall spell).
Despite being anept with Staff or dagger, Valerian took to hunting rabbits with a sling, and always carries one with him. A crack shot for being a wizard has kept him from relying on foodstuffs he carries as much. Also coming from poverty he enjoys a fine wine whenever he can, as the drink does not inhibit his thoughts as much as bring new ideas to focus writing or study.
