Dropped Hunted Animals
« on: November 18, 2012, 09:02:58 pm »

I have a hunter to get food and crafts form the surroundings, okay.

The Problem is, sometimes he drops the dead animal and leaves it there.

I hate having bolts wasted, so how do I get that animal?

I have tried dumping and reclaiming, but still nothing.

Help, please, fellow dwarves

1.) Are dwarves set to gather outside refuse?  If they ignore outside refuse, non-dwarven corpses outside get ignored.  This includes hunted animals that the hunter does not bring back, in my experience.  If dwarves are set to gather, than any hauler will go out and grab the corpse and bring it to a refuse pile, from which you can then queue a butchering job manually.

2.) Does the hunter have an available butcher's shop or refuse pile to bring the dead animal to that the hunter has proper access to?  You said "sometimes" so probably, but just making sure.

3.) If a hunter cancels his Return Kill task to go get a drink or if fleeing from unfriendlies, he'll drop the corpse, which is the most likely reason he's not bringing it back - another job took his attention before Return kill did.  And Return Kill only gets used once per hunt, in my experience - if the first return job fails, a hunter won't queue another for that corpse and will probably just go hunt a new animal instead.

Thank you for the quick response

I do have a butcher shop but the setting for outside refuse was on ignore.

I feel slightly silly but thank you very much.

Now I just have to make sure the dwarves don't try something dumb with it on.

Side Question:

Stray animal dies (fight or old age), can you butcher the animal?

Nope, tame animals can't be butchered once they dies. There're a workaround involving necromancer or resurrecting biome and re-killing it, but that's not always avaliable :D
