Another Headphone Topic
« on: November 18, 2012, 03:45:27 pm »

Grabbing myself a new pair of headphones. I'm currently using Sony's MDR ZX-100 and they have held out nicely, but I've got a brother that could use them and I wouldn't mind an upgrade. The sound quality is decent for the price, but it's not stellar, and apparently (I don't have anything to compare them to) the bass is horrible.

I was looking at this cheap pair of Sennheiser Professional 202's. They look decent: does anyone here have a pair of these? Would you recommend them, or should I shell out a bit more cash for something better?

Thanks.

I had Sennheiser HD 212 Pro's that were *pretty* good, then I upgraded to Sennheiser HD 280 Pro's that were exactly what I wanted.  It's kind of noisy here at times so I wanted closed headphones with serious noise isolation, they were both good but the 280's especially.  (You'll destroy your hearing if you pump up headphone sound too loud, and I want to hear even the quiet stuff well so I really REALLY wanted serious noise blocking so I could keep overall volume level down).  And great reproduction - no artificial pumped up bass like a lot of cheap sets do (if you INSIST you can do that in the mixer) but I could pick out details I had never heard before.  I got em for $65 on a Black Friday sale so keep your eyes open for deals around this time no matter what you pick.  I got em for music plus a little gaming.   Oh, they are pretty tight to get that noise reduction - if you have a *huge* head watch out...

Do you have any examples of music you really enjoy, or just the kind of sound you're looking for?

One of the models that I've seen most consistently praised is the Sony MDR-V6, for longevity if nothing else. Actually, the only consistent complaint I've seen about them was the bit about the earpads flaking apart after a decade or so, and those can be replaced for something like $6.00.

I'm using ZX-100's myself right now, never seen a reason to upgrade thus far. However, I did have a set of http://www.amazon.com/Sony-MDRNC7-BLK-Canceling-headphones/dp/B001EYU3L2/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1353306910&sr=1-1&keywords=MDR+NC7 that I really liked, and are about a step up. Ended up breaking them, but that was a result of some really rough handling, and I've got them kludged together right now and they still play fine.

Sennheiser HD 280 PRO are good, or you can get HD 380.

I'll try to edit this post with links later tonight, I have a ISP issue that blocks me from google/youtube/etc. when I've gone over the limit.

Undiscovered Colors by The Flashbulb - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TgoAgYR4584
Storytime by Nightwish - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T5i7htF2AwY
Hope Leaves by Opeth - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G3e6G_YNO0Y
Harlequin Forest by Opeth - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ij0IBNb0JtU

That should pretty much cover most of my musical tastes. I like my music either beautifully ambient or roaring. I'm into electronic, too.

I also am a big gamer, and one of my favorite games is all about tanks. So big booms and lots of rumbling, too.

Grado SR60i
I have the SR80i, which is almost the same. Certainly good headphones, but a bit pricey, and absolutely no sound cancellation. The headphones are fully open, and this doesn't work for most people.

My beef with them is the highs are usually too harsh for me, especially for female vocals and electric guitars. I'm even usually the type to EQ the treble up, but when I had V6s, I had to turn them down a bit. I didn't listen to Nightwish through them, but I imagine I wouldn't enjoy the vocals too much with the V6.

Koss PortaPros and Sennheiser PX 100 are great for the $30-50 bracket. The problem with the PortaPros is that they look sort of funky, and they aren't terribly comfortable. The biggest problem is that your hair gets caught in the headband. PX-100s don't shine as well for me when it comes to female vocals, since they sound much darker, but they're  much more comfortable and more portable than the PortaPros.

I'm guessing these are beyond your price range, then?
If not though, I would recommend them. I'm a bit of an audiophile, so it's going to be obvious my favourite thing about these is the fact that the sound quality is great. I'm also impressed at how durable they've been (thus far). I'm usually quite rough with headphones, but I'm still hoping this will be the pair to last me a lifetime.

The head suspension system is quite nice, it makes the headphones really comfortable, to the point you may just forget you're wearing them. Added with the fact they're open, I've often mistaken sounds coming from the headphones for being in the real world. It's quite an interesting experience.

Nope, not out of my price range, although getting open headphones wasn't something I was planning on. I like to keep my music private. I'm hoping for something below $70 USD and there's just so much to choose from with so little info on how they perform! Thanks for the suggestions, guys. I'll make my decision soon :)
