Then we just need to make DF worlds well-known so they are bought widely. Spread the word, people!

How about we donate with large generated DF worlds? It takes lots of processing power to create them, so only reputable sources will generate them: plus they have inherent value because you can play in them too!
Bitcoins are valuable because people are willing to buy them, not because they use processing power. The processing power is used to officiate bitcoin transactions, in place of a bank.

Well, let's be fair, worldgen stuff and things using it is much more valuable to the players AND Toady, if only for bugfix examination, or interesting 'accidents' :D

Ah, how about http://flattr.com/?

The GIMP guys implemented it and thought that it wouldn't really give them more than 2 cents, turns out after three months they received 800 times the amount they expected.

So they got $16?
herp a derp, 20000. I think they got about 400 euro?

In fact. bitcoins are do not benefit from people using improved processing units (generally GPUs). Individual miners do, but the system as a whole does not. The system is designed so that a transaction takes an average of an hour to officialise, and adjusts the reward to miners to make that happen.

Actually, as far as I know, the system is designed such that the value of a bitcoin does drift toward the value of the electricity used to generate them, over time. For obvious reasons.

That's true, and if you don't factor in the initial cost of the mining hardware then it works out that way. And the trend is desirable, because it would mean the barrier to entry is low. But that happens due to market forces, and not an algorithmic component to make that happen.

Accept payment? No.

Accept donations? Why not?

What else are people going to do with their bitcoins, since they can't really buy anything except drugs and prostitutes?

IN THE VERY NEAR FUTURE...
"Toady, we've done a quick check and you have the largest cache of bitcoins in the country."
"How did you-"
"FBI. Anyway, most people spend theirs as quickly as possible, but yours just keep piling up and you never spend them. Ever. We'd like to know why."
"Um"

MEANWHILE
"Ah yeah, yo. This leet mining rig is churning out the phat lewts. Let's see what I can spend this epic shizz on, dag yo."
*one google search later*
"Crack cocaine or Bay12 Games, meng. Gosharoonies! I guess I'll have to spend them all on the only legit use of bitcoins in the world, bro."
*spend*

ONE DAY EARLIER AT THE ADAMS RESIDENCE
"All right, let's try spending these bitcoins. Wait a minute, I'm the only legit use of bitcoins in the entire world. I'll just keep hoarding them."

I think we are lead astray here. All the Computing power DF needs and where toady claims its pathing and water? its all Bitcoins! It makes total sense! The reluctance to share code? So noone sees The Mining algorithm! The donations Button? Just a front sonoone wonders where Toady gets his money! Samps?! Because he is a adorable Kitty-cat!

Wake up People!

I am sorry i had to do that joke and i apologize for it. Especially to you Toady

I thought DF was a cover for calculating subatomic physics on a massive scale in order to predict the future...
