Kill him with a blow to the throat. You destroyed his knee, his career is over, he'll be put down once the guards finish dragging him off. Might as well do it.

Still. We technically are not supposed to kill in this venue... but then again Isith isn't that bright... Aw what the hell, FINISH HIM!

The steel mace hits the back of his calf, and he cries out in pain as he stumbles backward, wrenching the trident from your grip. The flange left a deep furrow in the back of his hamstrings, pulsing blood every time his muscles move

you swing it up, and then aim it as it comes crashing down onto Tacitus' head. He is more dexterous than you expect, and deflects the blow with his shield. The mace skids off with a screech, leaving a big dent on the upper part of the shield. You stumble, off balance for a moment

...wait, what? So...Tacitus takes a devastating and bloody wound to his leg, and that results in us losing grip on his weapon...not him?

...and then, with an injured leg pulsing blood...we hit him and he's able to block that downward attack without losing balance himself due to his injured leg...and we stumble and lose balance from hitting him?

Isith is a complete failure and he deserves to die.

((Wait, what?

Oh, I see what you mean. At that time, Isith was grabbing hold of the trident base with one hand, that's how WE lose the grip. And the impact with the shield wasn't direct, the mace slid off due to an angular surface.))

You look down at the pathetic hulk of a man below you. Your fingers tighten upon the cold steel of the mace, and you bring it above your head. The crowd is deadly silent for a moment, and the guards move even faster to try and get to the arena before the blow is delivered. The cold steel is brought crashing down upon your opponent's head, the skull splitting open like a sour melon. Brains get tossed among the closer in the crowd, and a huge cheer starts to erupt, the crowd satisfied with the first dirty kill of the day. You drop the mace, and walk off the ring, and are escorted rather roughly to a holding cell.

You probably stirred a hornet's nest there, but...
You were victorious.

Perspective Change: Aquila

An hour or two later after your large, fat comrade finished his opponent, it comes time for your match. The brains have been swept clean, and fresh blood spilled in two different matches that came after. The crowd is waiting for more blood, and you can feel only happy to oblige.

You are led up to the ring by the guards to meet your own opponent. He holds his buckler and one throwing spear in his right hand, and the other spear in his left. He has light armor, whereas you have medium armor, and a more offensive load out compared to his, focused to fighting at range. You have your steel Gladius, and the nasty scissor that is attached to your amputated arm.

What will be your tactic once the bell rings? Will you charge in for a quick, aggressive blow? Or will you try to play more defensively, picking your strikes?

I think we should try to play more defensively, try to limit his range that he has on us.

Agreed. Lob our javelin(s) at his chest.

Yes. Both Tacitus and Isith were holding one end of the trident. Tacitus got his leg mangled. Yet somehow the act of mangling Tacitus' leg caused Isith to lose his grip.

Imagine that you and I are both holding a pool cue with one hand. I punch you in the face. Which one of us is more likely to leg go?

...that doesn't make it better. Imagine someone with a bloodied, injured leg standing in front of you. Hit them on the top of the head with a club. And imagine falling over because that person standing on one good leg deflected your attack with a shield.

Isith is completely incompetant.

Play defensively. Wait for opponent to commit, then close distance. He has long range weapons, we have a short range weapon. Once we get in close we have the advantage. But if we go charging in right away he's obviously going to try to impale us as we do.

Ideally, get him to stab at us with the spear in his left hand. Once it's extended, that's the time to charge in.

Yeah, he punched Tacitus, who then stumbled backwards because of his injured (not crippled, its only bleeding ._. still off-balance because of pain/minor muscle injury however). In short, he moved away from Isith. That would cause the trident to be pulled from his hand if he was clutching it whilst standing still, no?

Give me your hand. *facepalm* You deserved that. Go think about what you've done.

Guys. We don't play forum games for accurate fight simulation... at least I don't.

Anyway. Charge in aggressively. Stay in his face. We likely have him if we force the fight into close range. That said strafe and zigzag a bit on your approach. Charging at him in a straight line is begging to take a spear to the face.

minor muscle injury

-- "The steel mace hits the back of his calf, and he cries out in pain as he stumbles backward, wrenching the trident from your grip. The flange left a deep furrow in the back of his hamstrings, pulsing blood every time his muscles move. It seems like a terribly painful injury"

Setting aside the strangeness that we somehow hit him in the back of the calf despite the fact that we were holding onto the far end of a thrusting weapon...I don't read that as "minor" injury.

Only if the trident was welded to Tacitus' hand or Isith is incompetent. Remember...Isith is holding one end, and Tacitus is holding the other. The trident was being pulled from Tacitus with just as much force as it was from Isith. Here is where Isith was holding the trident:

He had a superior grip position, both gladiators were using only one hand, and our gladiator was specifically grabbing anticipating that Tacitus would pull back on the trident, whereas Tacitus had just had his leg mangled and was falling to the ground.

Isith had every advantage, But apparently...our "strong" gladiator's grip was weaker than the grip of a guy who just had his leg mangled and was falling over from the pain.  Combine that with the fact that he lost his balance from hitting an already injured opponent. Remember, Tacitus was falling over just a moment ago because of the leg injury, and Isith was completely unhurt...yet nevertheless Isith hit the guy who only had one good leg and lost his balance as a result of hitting him. I repeat my accusation: Isith is a complete incompetent.

If he can't hold onto a weapon with as much strength as a gladiator falling to the ground in pain, and if he falls over himself when he hits people with only one good leg...he needs to die and be replaced with someone who has a clue. Like maybe a completely average and untrained 12 year girl would be a better choice.

Becuse I'm pretty sure if I were to stand on one leg and ask the average 12 year old girl to hit me with a club, she wouldn't fall over.

Wait for our opponent to heft a javelin at us, then charge once he throws. We can force him to fight at close range before he can get a second throw in (maybe?)

Yeah. We need to take our chances with the first Javalin and then get up close and personal.
