More like, since a path to hell has been breached from the surface, the demons now have a route out through which to invade other surface settlements.  The army would have to take the site back to more or less turn off the hell valve.
That's what I meant. Although now that I think about it, what's to stop demons from going through the caverns?

Good point... if the Caverns were to be linked to hell, I could see the cavern layers basically turning into hell's penthouse.  Not that breaching the cavern in that situation should immediately unleash the full force of the circus, but demonic invasions through the caverns would certainly be interesting.  Especially with the siege functionality Toady's been playing with implemented...

On the subject of demonic invasions though I feel we should discuss army composition.  While a full siege of demons would certainly be awesome, it could be a little too much, especially in a new fort.  Maybe instead of 60+ demons showing up it could be demon "officers" leading squads of magma men and fire imps, or some new form of lesser hellbeasts.

And so the strength of the demon sieges would increase as the fort grew, much like the way goblin sieges work? That seems pretty cool.

Hard science is like a sword, and soft science is like fear. You can use both to equally powerful results, but even if your opponent disbelieve your stabs, they will still die.

That would work. The hard part would be making the lesser demons make sense.

Hmm... could just be "demonic" or "possessed" versions of existing cavern creatures, similar to how necromancer invasion zombies work.

I'm looking forward to the possessed flying guts.

Hm. That should come from new functionality, of course. Some demons would be given special interactions which make the creature possessed or whatever. These interactions would be applied to some special troops joining the demons. Could lead to a revamp or demonic code.

I would want to see orcs implemented as the armies of the unde world. Me thinks that the orcs should be twice the size of humans and wear steel armor. Perhaps when breaching hell, 10 conventional demons and 200 of the orcs would spawn.

Well in that case, Orcs would have to be able to fly... which is a disturbing thought.

How would Orcs get into hell and befriend demons in the first place?

No demons created orcs. Orcs with wings even better.

And why would they have steel--or any--armor?

Because Tolkianic orcs are almost always portrayed as having steel armor.

Tolkianic? Hehehe.
But this is Dwarf Fortress, where Tolkien's influence is limited to the names of some creatures and their general stereotype (e.g., elves + forests = normal; but Tolkien's elves are very different from DF elves). If this is a mod, then feel free to give orcs access to steel. If it's a theoretical discussion on a possible update to the game, they'll still use silver swords and bronze war hammers, because this is Dwarf Fortress, where nonsense occurs regularly.

So, um. I can't remember what point I was trying to make. Huh.

Coulda sworn it was pig iron.
Anyways, orcs in Hell aren't" Tolkainic," they're more like imps or something.
