Jan looked around at the group. He was safe here, he figured, but so were they. They wouldn't need him. And as much as it went against his instincts to willingly walk into danger, he decided that if he was here, he might as well help. So he followed behind them, rifle in hand.

He gestures towards a nearby apartment building and continues walking into an alleyway between it and another building.
"Don't bother going in the front door. It's barricaded."
He climbs up the fire escape to the third floor and enters through a window. He briefly sticks his head out to say, "Watch out, I've got a wire running across there. It's a warning system I set up."
