Definitely go for tech from the Melnorme first, as that helps with quality of life and survival immediately. Current events is second best, as it helps you with exploration and some quest items. Races is less useful, historical is all background information (which is awesome, but not an immediate priority). Also, BIO data isn't the only thing they'll take. They asked for information on special worlds that look like trippy rainbows. These appear bright yellow from space, and there's at least one in the corner of the galaxy you're in.

Well I've definitively been teching up quite a bit. History/information will only become a priority once I get settled in more or get stuck or something. Right now we have several plot-lines to follow. Also if for some reason I enter a system with a special planet but don't land/find it, will you tell me? I'm not going to revisit a bunch of systems and waste fuel just to find it. Also, I suppose that the same could apply if I never visit the system and will probably never go that way again, but eh.

For the flagship, I always used one big gun in the forward slot and the lower rank gun in the second slot. I didn't bother with it until later in the tech tree, though. There are a few extreme lazy features I wouldn't do without. ;)

What else am I going to do with all of these RUs besides more weaponry? Well, maybe more fuel, and perhaps more cargo space. Still we're not particularly hurting for either of them, and we'll need the extra pew-pew eventually.

You know, watching this, which does not know whats up, and then also watching Grimith's lp of it again for some kind of comparison is hilarious on both ends.

I'm... probably going to check that out later, once this LP is finished.

Speaking of LP, have another episode. I'm just cranking them out today.

Right now I'm debating about whether to go galactic west around the Spathi territory to see if the Umgah are pulling any tricks on the Ilwrath, or galactic east to check up on the Syreen and maybe the Zoq-Fot-Pik the Ur-Quan civil war. And... I suppose that we could also head east to see if the Yehat won't shoot us on sight, but we do have the Pkunk with us... Maybe check out if the Melnorme want some dead Shofixti bodies? (I kid, I kid). Any ideas? Am I missing anything important in our area? I doubt it, but still...

A quick visit to the wiki tells me I was completely wrong about the rainbow worlds. You haven't missed any, and there aren't any close. I'm dumb.

What to spend RU's on? The game is quite young.

All your plans are good. I think, for most of the important things, Hayes updates you on immediate local happenings. I don't think there's anything else you can do near Sol, for now. My general advice is... the time limits have definite consequences (Pkunk will be dead if the Ilwrath don't leave them alone, etc). Also, diplomacy may work more often than you think.

Speaking of... I didn't remember how poorly the Pkunk were drawn and voiced. That really is bad, to the point that I prefer the puppet from StarCon3. The original PC version had no voices, and that's one of the very few they got completely wrong.

Quick question for those who've beaten the game before (horrendous spoilers follow!):

Well I'm going after the Umgah next, so the Pkunk shouldn't be dying any time soon. Unless the Umgah are completely innocent, in which case... Uh... I'd be completely stumped. Maybe I'll go looking for the Ilwrath homeworld? However I kinda doubt that'll work (unless it sets off some flags or something), and I'm assuming that your diplomacy comment is referring to the Yehat, who are supposed to be merging with the Pkunk sometime soon, probably thanks to my brave actions or something.

Also: The Pkunk definitively look better than they sound. That's not saying much.

And another thing, if you guys are going to have spoiler conversations, can you clearly mark them as spoilers so that my knee doesn't jerk and open them by accident? You can still keep talking though, since I think that it'll be fun to go back and read them once I've beaten the game.

EDIT: Nix the Umgah idea. They're too far away for a useful voyage. It takes about an entire fuel tank to get there, and we don't have the RUs to spend on extra fuel, nor do we have the time to look for the super teleporting Greenish. I hope that the Androsynth will be happy to see us.

EDIT2: Who wants some background information? I know I do!

I assume there will be lots to talk about after the game is completed, in any case.

Edit/Addendum!
If you're headed that way anyway, the Vulpecula cluster (one green supergiant, 6 green dwarfs IIRC) is very efficient and mineral rich. And my diplomacy comment referred to lots of things. And didn't refer to others. Ominous, obscure undertones. Ominous!

I've already done the videos, but thanks for the heads up. I'll probably be going through that space in the future anyways.

It'll be a while before I can do the commentary (heh) for the videos, but rest assured that they were very productive. At the very least, we now have more than enough fuel to find the Umgah homeworld and hopefully save the Pkunk. Hopefully. After all, time is starting to run out for them. They only have... half a year to live? Or about six more updates. Something along those lines. More than enough time.

Work the angles damn it. If they are willing to follow you, like the Ilwrath, just go left/right/up/down so that you don't have to aim so much!

Would you like to actually play some space battle sometime? I'm always up for a game, and I'll be happy to try and help you handle the ships a bit better. Especially if it saves me hour battle video watching in the future. ;)

For example, if you just fly away as far as possible away from the Ilwrath first I think you have enough time to escape. (corner to corner)

I wouldn't mind some space battling action, though obviously I probably won't win. Or do much damage. Still, practice, practice, practice. Also the latest battles are much shorter, probably because I'm not against the Ilwrath with their bloody cloaking fields, so I actually can see what I'm aiming at. I hear that it improves accuracy.

Anyways, while you all are waiting for the next round of videos, have some more background related to the Androsynth. I'm sure that the two people who haven't played the game before will enjoy it.

I won't mind doing some space battling as well, and maybe I can give you pointers on combat as we fight via Skype or something. Of course, I've done my share of Super Melee against my siblings before, so I may be a tad hardcore to play against.

I'll show you different combat methods, like using inertia at max speeds (especially nasty if you can do this with a druuge mauler, where the method, with timing, makes them particularly nasty), and a bit of tinkering with offsetting to work with the fixed angles of attack (also why I suggested 2 gun placements for the flagship, if you're not as good a shot), and I can also showcase a combat method that ups the combat effectiveness of especially little ships, and slow heavy ships by using the gravity well of a planet to your advantage. Not the Leyland Gravity Whip, but rather, actually orbiting the planet, which doubles as an escape plan just in case the computer catches on (not as effective against human players).

Also, I know how much hate the game gets, but I did like some of the new ships in 3, too. I thought the Clairconctlar (I think that's the one... it dopped teleport beacons for quick escapes) and exquivans were particularly hilarious. Since it's non-canon, I don't feel bad about discussing it, since we're between vids. Anyone actually played it and willing to admit it? :P

It takes us a while, but we manage to get to Betelgeuse and then back home again. No hour-long combat sequences, but we've got tons of talking and plot.

Also, do any of you guys know where Unzervalt is? I'm thinking that it's either a typo of some sort, or it's a planet name I paid absolutely no attention to. Either or.

That would be a bit of work to do; plus, I don't know if I have a video recording program I can use, besides my livestream channel, I suppose. If you want to watch me battle live, and suggest me battles to do in Super-Melee via chat, I can always open my channel back up. I can have my mic on to respond and teach as I fight.

If you recall through various conversations in the game (mainly the one with Hayes) you ought to look in the Vela system (It's the star you came from, where the research team was sent to). It's not named in orbit, or anything, but that's the place.

Combat Tip: Ur-Quan
The Ur-Quan are a deadly foe, but are also scared when it comes to sending fighters after any ship with a point-defense device (Vindicator and Cruiser, as well as the Chmmr Avatar), seeing as fighters can be 1-shotted to death by those auto-tracking guns, and it would be pointless to send suicide squadrons after them. Keep your Cruisers at a distance, and pummel them, and gravity whip when you can to keep your distance. With the Vindicator, it doesn't hurt to have at least 1 point defense for this same advantage to keep the distance advantage. And with the Chmmr, just tractor pull them all over the place until they hit a planet, or are in range of your beam weapon/point defense, but can't fire upon you. I don't remember if the fighters' AI is fixed or not in this, but they may or may not avoid the planet, but asteroids might be a different matter.

I hope you find this information *squishy*, *happy camper*.

EDIT:
To explain why the probes give so much RU, is because they're replicators. They're made up entirely of solid refined materials, as opposed to the hollow tubes we're more familiar with that we fight and fight in. Eating as much as possible until they reach enough capacity to split apart into another set of probes. You can say they're condensed exotic materials.

Unzervalt was the slave shielded world you fought Ur-quan over. It's not labeled as your homeworld in-game, but that's the place.

If memory serves, you're 6 or 7 techs away from finishing the tech line. Things really pick up after that, so you're at least nearing the end of planet mining hell and getting on with the real meat of the game.

Star Control 3 is.. an interesting topic. I'll do a write-up of it in it's own post in a day or two, so people who might be curious can read about it, but any who aren't can just skip the whole thing.
