I like the idea alot and I think as long as all the other stuff in df, like floor water ramp and creature size relation dont really make sense, I would not care to much about how this fits into the flore.

Heh, I agree Ogg.  It doesn't totally make sense, but it makes as much sense as existing features, and would be pretty handy.
