My new Volcano Fortress
« on: November 16, 2012, 01:14:37 pm »

Started this with 7 dwarves, no skills and only a copper pick axe.

I now have a happy population of 76 dwarves all trying to forget the horrors that occured a few years before. I do not know how it started, maybe the rock from the volcano which killed the first dwarf or the miasma they failed to clean up fast enough. But 45 dwarves went mad/crazy or berserk and either killed themselves or got shot by my military. The corpses just pilled up and my dwarves couldn't keep up with the coffins. They finnaly went back to being happy when they all got their own bedroom with cabinets/chests and a few golden statues spread arround the fortress.

Reminds me of the fortress I made where I drained a volcano into a bottomless pit, build a fortress supported in the center of the volcano, then let it refill.

Sadly, the nemisis bug ate the save shortly after the filling completed.

Isn't there a danger of magma crabs and the like crawling from up the volcano?

In case it wasn't obvious, I do know that dividing by zero is a mathematical impossibility. I do not know, however, how this dwarven calculator would react if anyone attempted the impossible. Please, someone try! xD
If you look back in the thread, some people did try, and they got 8008135, which is significant only in that the digits resemble the letter in "BOOBIES".
And so dwarf fortress solves yet another of lifes great mysteries.

:D Awesome.

Next challenge: build a fortress ENTIRELY SEALED in a volcano, and figure out if you can make it go forward in complete isolation.

Easily possible if you allow a water source in, or really just wet a spot ( constuctred or not ) for farm, before sealing it up :D

Granted, the isolation's the easiest part, the volcano thing is harder!

I've tried something along those lines using obsidian casting. Only managed to fill up the top 3 layers of the volcano though.

Ye, I have seen a few magma crabs; but they haven't come near the surface yet. Only threat so far are the blocks shooting from the volcano occasionally.

I always seem to get a poor volcano embark. I never have goblin neighbors if I embark on one.

At my current volcano the magma stops about 25 levels below the top of the tube. I'm flooring over the entire tube for my forge level, and will later proceed to move my entire fort into upper constructed levels.

Children you rescue shouldn't behave like rabid beasts.  I guess your regular companions shouldn't act like rabid beasts either.
I think that's a little more impossible than I'm likely to have time for.

The only thing stopping me doing that is that I can't engrave the walls...

Spinning basalt? If I understand correctly, that is the magma crabs attacking your dwarves.

If you are not afraid of the added work, obsidian-casting is a solution. Have fun designing the system! Mega-project incoming.

and btw, there are some Fun embarks in the world gen cookbook thread. And if no embark suits you, just ask for a custom one.

Thats why I usually wall in, or floor over the entire volcano cap, and deconstruct a few holes for the smelters and forges.

Learned my lesson after a magma crab broke my legendary weaponsmith's upper spine, and killed my near-legendary armorsmith, resulting in their spouses throwing a fit and tossing around masterwork steel serrated discs like an Olympic champion, severing limbs left and right.

In a fortress a few versions ago, I'm sure I floored over the entire surface of the volcano, only to have a magma crab crawl out of the opening in a magma forge, burn my legendary weaponsmith a few new holes, then vanish back into it's hole.

Made me go back to coal for a bit...
