In a fortress a few versions ago, I'm sure I floored over the entire surface of the volcano, only to have a magma crab crawl out of the opening in a magma forge, burn my legendary weaponsmith a few new holes, then vanish back into it's hole.

Made me go back to coal for a bit...

Yeah, I've had surprisingly little problem dealing with magma critters, probably because I hate how open tile of magma shines if I don't cover it with my workshop's impassable tile. That does helps a lot, since things will crawl or fall in through the uncovered tiles that shows.

Yeah, I did do that with a previous magma forge area, but that was directly over the magma sea. Had a magma crab crawl up and torch ALL my smiths and smelter workers, until a marksdwarf picking up a new boot came down and shot it.

You inspired me. I'm gonna build my new volcano fortress just like yours!

Getting a good choice of volcano is easy... On advanced world gen parameters, I use large region, minimum volcanism, 17%. You get a volcano in every street corner. Then I look for a volcano with plenty of trees... and a stream.
