Question about cage traps
« on: November 16, 2012, 09:41:36 am »

I had a bit of an embarrassing, and slightly scary (to me) issue with a cage trap and a snatcher. Namely, I had a snatcher get trapped in a cage, but when one of my dwarfs came to haul it to the animal stockpile, he ended up releasing the thing, letting it run off. The worst part is that the dwarf kept chasing it, trying to take it to the stockpile, until I deactivated the stockpile since if that goblin was armed, he would've torn my poor mechanic apart.

I was under the impression that the dwarves would haul the captured animal (or in this case, goblin) to the zone, cage and all and I am sure I was following how the trap is explained on the wiki. Okay I probably overlooked a detail, but I can't find what I did wrong. How exactly am I able to move a filled cage without releasing the trapped target in it like an idiot?

Since you refer to it as a "zone" in the second paragraph I'm assuming you don't mean a literal animal stockpile (designated from p->a). My best guess is that instead you were trying to drag him to a pit/pond zone; in that case the dwarf bringing him there will always take them out of the cage first. The proper way to go about dropping things in pits is to have an animal stockpile directly adjacent to some holes which are designated as pit/pond zones. First wait for the cage to be placed in the animal stockpile, then add them through the pit zone information. If the cage is adjacent to the hole there's no chance for the creature to escape before being dropped in.

Thieves and snatchers will try to escape whenever they're released, either from the trap or when dwarves tries to take them out.

You pretty much need to have the cage right next to the pitting to drop them in, or have dwarves catch up to them ( I've heard that if they get grabbed after escaping, they don't tries again ).

Sorry, it was a misnomer. I did actually set up an animal stockpile. I made it after the snatcher was captured. However the moment I set it up, a dwarf attempt to "pen/pasture" it rather than physically drag the cage to the stockpile as I expected. I had no intention on releasing the gobbo at the time, I only wanted to know if it would get dragged the way I thought it would. It did not. Now I'm scared of what to do after something else gets captured because I'm afraid that rather than safely dragging the cage away with the creature inside, one of my dwarves will release it and get his face turned into a bloody mess.

Nah, as long as it don't get taken out of cage, they'll stay in. Well, if you tries to trade it, they get released too. But that goes for anything non-tame!

I believe gremlins and the like -might- be able to release them, but I've not seen it happen.

Pen/pasture means they were taking it to a pasture zone ("n" in the zone menu), but I don't think they'll do that unless explicitly told to bring the creature. Perhaps you accidentally marked the goblin for pasturing when trying to move some cows around, or something like that? Make sure you check your pasture zone to see that the goblin isn't marked as part of it.

Just checked, it isn't. I didn't think it would anyway. It's a pretty early on fort and there's only three animals that need to be pastured (and I put them in there long before this little incident).

I am playing with a mod, is it possible that it was a bug?

Mods wouldn't have done it. My guess is the same as TKGP's, that you accidentally marked it to be put into a pasture, pit, or built cage and as such your dwarves started to haul it.

Note: The only invaders that will escape while being pitted/pastured are thieves and snatchers. Normal soldiers will just be brought along docilely and will never escape.

It would be brutally difficult and probably won't work. In other words, it's absolutely dwarven!

I don't think it's possible to bug that kind of behavior, it only happens if you assigns something to pasture or be pitted.

I'm still guessing accident, since it's easy to confuse them with long list.

Well recently I caught a handful of new enemies so I'll see if it is handled correctly. Worst case scenario, one of my dwarves get's stabbed in the eye or throat, but at least it'll show how I screwed up.

I wonder, can you sell trapped enemies to a caravan or something?
