Get the fuck out of there. If they catch us again it will be unlikely we can talk our way out of it a second time. Flee up hill if possible so you can keep an eye on them.

Retreat to the woodline and keep to the shadows, we have an advantage playing hide and seek there with our natural night vision.  Get out of what's left of our bonds once we have the (relative) security of being hidden and distant.  We can work out what to do next once we're fully capable again.

There's no sense in unnecessary risks, so you pelt for a nearby copse of trees.  [Stealth: 3+0+4(Night) = 7] As you run, you hear shouts from behind you and glance back; Nal has spotted you and is making chase, the others not far behind.  [Bow 1+4-4 v Dodge 13+0] You see Nal raise his bow and dive for the ground, rolling and trying to restart the run after.  There is a loud snapping and a second glance reveals that Nal's bowstring snapped under tension; he lost his cool trying to fire at you.

[Athletics: 15+0, Stealth: 15+0+5] You keep running until you reach the copse, staying well ahead of your pursuers.  You are utterly out of breath but you force yourself to keep yourself from panting and wheezing lest the noise give you away.  You scramble up a random tree and lie in wait for a few minutes.  [Luck: 6] The hunters keep to the copse of trees, fanning out slightly but keeping one another within sight.  Only Jirn, the wagoner, draws a little further out from the group.

Your hiding place is a good one, but they seem determined to search the whole copse (which is only about a hundred or so trees).  Getting to high ground or another copse will require another run, or else sneaking across open ground.  On the other hand it might take them about ten minutes to perform a complete search, so you do have a little breathing space.  How do you proceed?

Climb a high tree and hide in the leaves!
Unless it's autumn or winter!

It's... [5] early spring.  New green leaves are sprouting from the branches, though they still for the most part remain denuded.  A soft chill breeze blows through the branches, producing a haunting whistle.  The sky is clouded, blocking the gentle rays of the moon and giving you just a little bit more of an edge against both pursuer and cold.

In the distance, carried on the breeze, you think you can hear laughter.  It could be your imagination, but you swear you can hear a thousand chirrupy voices cackling in anticipation.  Once you escape you'd best find fire, a friend or an enclosed space, or hope that the branches of the tree will provide sufficient cover.

After all, even goblins should fear the night.

Slip out and start sneaking back to their camp. If you get spotted change direction and run for another Copse. If you don't throw what you can onto the wagon in a few minutes and take off, moving away from Mudcups.

You consider staying up in the tree you are already in, but the leaves are pretty sparse.  You decide to risk a bold tactic again.  [Stealth: Natural 1, Luck: 8] You swing yourself down out of the tree with graceful, silent ease - and fall smack into the chest of Cal.  He staggers back in surprise, then shouts: "He's here!  Over here!"

Cal's still holding his bow, so he swings at you with the length of it rather than trying to shoot point blank.  [Hammer 1+0-1(Light) v Dodge 18+0]  You glibly throw yourself to the ground and the bowshaft passes over you - smack into the tree trunk.  You hear a crack as the shaft snaps, but you don't bother to check.  You're on your feet again and running like the wind for another hiding place.

[Athletics: Natural 1] You trip over a tree root and fall flat on your face.  Cal catches up with you in the blink of an eye, boot knife drawn, and shoves you down to the ground, going to his knees after you.  He draws the blade back for a killing stroke.

Crap.  Fight or flight?

Kick the man in the stomach, then hit his wrist. Grab knife. Execute him..

We aren't exactly an experienced warrior, here, deftly disarming him and killing him in one stroke isn't something that's going to happen.  But yes, we need to get him off of us so we can at least get back to our feet.  Boot him in the midsection and try to knock the wind out of him, that should buy a moment or two.

Oh, right. Drop the 'Execution' part. Still need to get the knife. Forgot for a moment that rather than be anything useful or capable of survival, 'we' picked a scribe.

We have some knife skill.  We aren't such a super badass that we're going to win when we're on the ground, fighting a bigger opponent, have our wrists bound, and are soon to be outnumbered 3 vs 1.  We'll get there eventually, but only if we survive tonight.

Course eventually we should put our bookworm habits to powerful use and track down a necro slab to read, but again, need to survive tonight first.

I wanted to be a sneaky, knife-using snatcher, but noooo...

[Wrestling: 13+0 vs Dodge 3+2] You kick up with your foot (which in lieu of shoes is wrapped in bits of fur these days - classy!) and get Cal right beneath the ribcage.  The blow knocks the wind out of him and he recoils, losing his grip on you.  You take advantage of the momentary shift to struggle out from directly beneath him [Wrestling 20!+0 vs Dodge 15+2] and grab hold of his wrist with your clawlike hands.  Something fell stirs within your heart, hearkening back to the pit days, and you twist with either hand - you feel a slight snapping as his hand jerks open in reflex and the knife falls from his fingers.  Cal grabs his wrist in pain, leaving an opening in which you snatch up the blade.

Well.  Looks like things might be looking up after all.  [Knife 5+2 v Dodge 4+2] You slash inexpertly at Cal, a wide and flailing arc that would not have connected had he not leapt into its path while trying to avoid it.  The blade cuts through his rope reed clothing and produces a deep slash across his weapon arm.  Blood splashes freely onto the ground.  [Dodge 11+0 vs Wrestling 12+2] Cal growls in pain and anger and bull rushes you, catching you beneath your chin with his shoulder and bowling you back to the ground again.  Pain floods through your jaw.

[Knife 5+2 vs Dodge 20!+2] You try and stab upward with the blade, but Cal sees it coming and sweeps his arm out, deflecting the blow.  You lose your grip and the knife flies a short distance away from the pair of you.  [Dodge 3+0 vs Wrestling 2+2] You try and scrabble toward the knife, but Cal brings his elbow down hard in the small of your back, making you squeal.  [Wrestling 6+0 vs Dodge 1!+2] Cal then makes a dash for the knife himself.  You roll over onto your belly and grab him by the legs with your hands, screeching as he struggles for the blade.  You clamber onto his back, wrapping your fingers around his throat and squeezing with all your might - his fingers just touch the knife's hilt when you feel the windpipe snap in your grasp.

Cal starts choking to death, so you reach over him and grab the knife to finish him off.  [Luck: 14] You made it a fair distance, and though you can see Nal and Jirn heading in your direction they are still some distance off and don't appear to know exactly where you are.  The fight took place among some light brush and was mostly on the ground, so even though they heard the screams they weren't able to see it.

Cal is still slowly suffocating upon his own windpipe beneath you, though the strength seems to have left him now.  You could let him die slowly or take care of him with mercy.  On the other hand, you're pretty banged up and your map and possessions are still on the wagon.  You do at least have the advantage of stealth again.
