Pasturing, breeding, taming and training?
« on: November 15, 2012, 04:35:18 am »

I'm a little confused as to which animals actually require a pasture, which can be tamed and which can be trained. I think it's:

- Animals must be tame to train.
- Trainable animals do not require a pasture (e.g. dogs)
- A tame, non-trainable animal must be pastured (if applicable)
- Wild animals caught in cages can be tamed and won't (?) require a pasture.
- Breeding happens as long as there is at least one female and one male.

Other question: Can you butcher straight from cages, even dangerous creatures? Or will they maul the butcher.

It seems you got it all wrong.

Animals with the [GRAZER] tag need pastures over grass or cavern moss to feed. Otherwise they will starve to death. Any other animal does not need a pasture, but you can use pastures to keep dogs at your gate for a first line defense, for example.

Some animals can be trained into war animals. Here's a list: http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2012:Animal_trainer

Wild animals can be caught with cage traps and be trained. If they have the [GRAZER] tag, they'll need a pasture over grass or moss to survive. Anything else can be kept in cages if you like to.

Breeding happens if the animals are able to breed at all. The requirement is a male on the map, but there's no direct path between the male and female needed.

At last, captured animals can be tamed and slaughtered. I usually do this with useless animals I capture (like small birds).

I'm not familiar with training system, but I'll answer what I can!

- Trainable animals do not require a pasture (e.g. dogs)
- A tame, non-trainable animal must be pastured (if applicable)

Pasture just is an area where creatures can be assigned to, it does not means they NEED it ( exception is grazer, because they're not currently smart enough to find food, so practical issues )

Wild animals shouldn't be assignable to pastures, they also don't graze UNTIL they're tamed.

Yes, breeding happens when female's out of cage, at least, I've seen some notes about male being able to spore from within, but I prefer to keep them outside and use cage for babies. And you can butcher tame animals straight from cages, wild and semi-tame will likely attack the butchers ( invader mounts, too, but you should kill them anyway ) wild's not even butcherable without being killed first, or tamed and selected for it.

Right... That's a little confusing but I think I understand.

Do adopted pets need a pasture? As far as I can tell they seem to live longer than my stray(tame) animals. Are there any creatures that can be assigned as war/hunting pets but also need a pasture? I didn't realise how much micromanagement animals took :P

Only grazers, really, to keep them fed. But if you want to place animals in the right spot, as an alert or guard, pasture's useful for that.
