Minneapolis, Minnesota.
2:34 PM. Minutes after the nuke hit.
It was a normal day. Clear skies. 71 degrees Farenheit. You were walking through the streets of northern Minneapolis. You were getting some groceries from the nearby Aldi, though not without issues. Minneapolis isn't known for being the happiest of cities. A group of teen-aged thugs tried to rob you, and pulled out knives to intimidate you. As you watched them brandish their weapons, you pulled out a Colt M1911 handgun and said "Nice try, kids, but I think you just brought a knife..." You paused as you drew your weapon, "to a gunfight. Now, go on, get out of here." They retreated.
A little while later, you get back home. Since you live in a small house, you have to manage with what your money got you. The house was seemingly randomly put together. The kitchen and pantry were built into the basement. The bedrooms were put on the top floor. After you put your groceries where they belonged, you looked at the clock. 2:28 PM. You think your wife is going to be home in another 10 minutes. You never knew what was going to happen...
North Korea and the US had some political issues going on for a few years past, but you didn't really care about that. You did hear that North Korea was threatening to launch nuclear weapons, and that got you a little more anxious, but you quickly passed it off as a promise that wouldn't be kept. You didn't think it would happen...
You heard a faint
boom. You looked out the window, and thought it was an airliner. You heard the crackle of a rocket engine, and knew it wasn't what you thought. It was Korea's nuclear missile. You quickly ran down to your basement and slammed the door. You grabbed your pistol, ran to the bathroom, and lied down in the bathtub. Then, a deafening explosion hit nearby. You lost consciousness...
You woke up in a pile of rubble, dust covering you. Half your body is underneath a van. Just as you feared, your hometown was hit directly. Everybody you knew had to be dead, or buried in rubble, going to die soon. You had no doubt about that... You think you hear someone yelling,
"HEY, IS ANYBODY ALIVE OUT HERE?!?" You try to shout back, but as you draw in a breath, you inhale a lungful of the dust covering you. A big coughing fit ensues. Fortunately, the man with the clear throat hears your coughing, and you hear footsteps coming toward you.
"Come on, man, stay with me. I'll get you outta here," then you start to lose consciousness again, this time with a burning in your throat. You start coughing up blood.
"Stay with me, come on," and you feel a gas mask come up to your mouth and nose. You gulp down large breaths of fresh air into your lungs, drag yourself from underneath the van, and grope through the rubble. You feel cold metal, and pull it out; it's your Colt. You quickly scrabble around and find some more ammo for it, and you quickly shove them in your pockets.
"Good, we might need that. Now come on," and the man puts your arm around his shoulder and helps you to a small, crudely-fortified project house. Inside, the man brings you to a bed, in which you lie down and fall asleep for several hours.
When you wake up, the sun is setting, and you see a few bits of food, a backpack, and a canteen on a small table next to the bed. You hear gunshots, and the man tells you
"Gear up, we gotta get moving quickly. Bandits are starting to come in, and this place has pretty high radiation levels. We can't risk our lives." You nod in agreement, and the man leaves. You put the food in the backpack, leaving one piece out for you to snack on, reload your Colt, take a drink of water, and finally, eat the biscuit that you left out. You feel refreshed, and head downstairs. You quickly took inventory, and then went outside in a destroyed world...
However, you seem to have forgotten your name, and you try to remember it as you head out the door.
Other than that,
what are you going to do? The man that helped you is standing by the project gate.
