Your main expense will be lodging. If you aren't willing to sleep out of your car, consider couchsurfing or at least staying at Hostels when available.

Get AAA.

Uh... I imagine other stuff too.

What's your route look like? Any planned stops along the way to do touristy crap?

Going it alone? I know I'd have a lot of trouble doing nothing but driving most of the day. It's nice to have someone to trade shifts with.

Going it alone. And yes, I'd love someone to trade shifts with, but the logistics would probably be a nightmare xD

Not really. I'm not much of a tourist. I'd be going out to meet people, not see things.

And the route isn't really set in stone at the moment. All I *know* I want to visit is South Carolina and Missouri. I've been considering taking a plane to SC and driving back.

Two, I have no idea how the hell I'm going to pay for it. Google Maps gives my estimated route to be ~4300 miles.
Ain't it cheaper and easier and even faster to travel by plane/train/bus?
Not in USA, but I was travelling by car for 1000km (~600 miles) and it took me one day (approx 9 hours of driving in the countryside + 2 hoursin traffic jams near the city). Not to say that it was very expensive (mb Russia has too cheap gas and too expensive trains/planes?). Ofc car is faster that bus or train (trains here are slow too:)), but only because it was a 1-day trip. While you are in the train, you can eat and rest and sleep while train travels, thus resulting in much more distance covered. And if I was not tired by this 600 miles route, I think I'll hate road after 1500-2000 miles travelled!

Expect to pay around 4-4.5 bucks a gallon in the Northeastern part of the US.

Perhaps changing your tires to 'all-weather' or snow or some such may be helpful.  Car charger for your cell phone.  If you don't have a cell phone, just pick up one of those 600 minutes cell phones and of course get in the contact numbers that ya might need...

According to gasbuddy.com, gasoline in the Northeast fluctuates between roughly $3.35 (Newark, NJ) $3.40 (Boston, MA) to $3.80 (NYC, NY) currently. It's all the way down to $3.29 in DC. Here in Battle Creek, Michigan, it was $3.66 this afternoon.

Edit: A misspelling was bothering me.

This thread doesn't really apply to me anymore (settled on buying a one-way plane ticket), but I'll leave it open should anyone else want any general advice concerning road trips.

Wait... A one-way plane ticket? With lots of stopovers or something? ???
I'm just wondering how you'd visit a heap of different places like that via plane, unless you mean to catch public transport as well.
