General advice for a USA roadtrip (mainly, expenses)
« on: November 14, 2012, 11:31:46 pm »

So, I've been seriously looking into this since more than one person has asked me to visit and offered me a place to stay for a few days, and I'd certainly like to meet some of my online buddies. However, there are some problems.

One, it's the middle of winter, or soon will be. I've gotten some warnings about icy roads from my father already.
Two, I have no idea how the hell I'm going to pay for it. Google Maps gives my estimated route to be ~4300 miles. That's a hell of a lot of gas.
Three, I'm a horrible driver. My father wants me to do it so I gain some experience, but that doesn't mean I'm not terrified of breaking down in the middle of nowhere and freezing to death.

Any generalized advice/offers of a place to stay/willingness to pay for everything? :P

Oh, I'm hesitant to give specifics as to where I'm going, to protect people's private information, but it'll be from Utah down to South Carolina, maybe up to Michigan, and back. That's my rough estimation; it could change.

But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

Well, I'm naught but a poor college student, but if you decide to head to western Washington I could lend you a cot and sleeping bag for a few days.

Haha, I'll be moving to Seattle later. I'm going in the opposite direction for this :)

Man, I would totally have you over if I had my own place again.

Also, changing your own tires is easy and knowledge you need to have. Possibly the air filter, too. Get your oil changed and antifreeze topped up before you leave. Possibly keep a spare set of windshield wipers and a gallon or so of wiper fluid (de-icing is a wonderful thing) handy.

Holy crap, why did I not start watching One Punch Man earlier? This is the best thing.
probably figured an autobiography wouldn't be interesting

I don't know your situation but I doubt this will be in the realm of "soon." I was hoping for after Thanksgiving but at this point it's almost certainly going to be January/later (if at all; still in planning stages). So if you get yourself in a new place by then :3

That's probably not going to happen until at least next winter. I mean, if this is going to be an annual trip, then we'll see. Anytime this year, though? Probably not. :<

I'd give you a place, but my parents would probably be a bit creeped out.

estimate at least 150% for gas (make sure to add a dollar for the east coast since their damn prices are high for no shit reason), check towns to see if they got some hostels you can crash at for cheaps. fuck fast food, keep alot food in your car preferably cold (ice is cheap), you can always wrap it up in foil and warm it up on your engine block. Remember sudden changes in laws when crossing state lines, cops will love to stick your out-of-state ass with fines. for engine stuff just make sure the transmission and the engine is fine and you should roll fine, keep a spare $400 incase for trip repairs.

I made a trip across the states this year, a bit longer then yours. 4 months. I would gladly give you some tips, I have been travelling the last 6 years. The thing is, I cant help you much about cars and gas prices, since I always go by bicycle. Or hitchhike ;) If you really want to press it, 20 Bucks is the minimum for the states. Be sure to check couchsurfing a lot, or check on craigslist raidshare (edit:lol, I meant rideshare) if you can take other travellers part of the way. That way you help them with transport and they help with the gasoline costs :)

What kind of car do you have, enough space for a mattress/kitchen? That would save money, my girlfriend is goind round NZ/Australia atm in a campervan.

Stay away from northern Idaho. There be Neo-Nazis in them hills.
