My Monarch is AWOL. Can I still become a Dutchy?
« on: November 14, 2012, 11:03:59 am »

I got the announcement that my fortress had been made into a mountainhome. A bunch of migrants arrived. I waited expectantly. No monarch. Not even a corpse from a queen that was too old and rapidly decayed into ash. The migrant wave ended quickly. I thought the message must have been erroneous. The queen was a mason, and I couldn't find a single dead mason even in the aftermath of a bloody siege.

Then, later, I found out that I had several legendary weapondwarves in my fort. I was surprised by this until I looked it up on Magmawiki and learned that the monarch generally comes with a bunch of those. I completely missed them, meaning they must have come in from another part of the map. So the monarch was supposed to spawn, but didn't.

Either that or she dropped dead and her entourage was already heading towards the fortress and never noticed. That's one problem with having people attending on you that "Don't care about anything anymore", I guess!

Anyone experienced anything remotely like this? And since all I am is a barony right now, can I still get promotions, or is the dwarven liason's recommendations forever denied to me and as such I will never actually be upgraded? Although with the king here but dead, the site is already a mountainhome, so I suppose it doesn't matter, but I am wondering.

Once you becomes a mountainhome, liaison don't comes anymore, AFAIK. I've never bothered to become one, but that's what I see others complain about once they becomes one.

Okay. An update. I just found out my queen is still alive. She is obsessed with her own mortality and seeking to prolog her life by any means, but she is not a necromancer, and is just fine. She's not listed as having moved to my fortress and the last event that shows her as being around is in another fortress entirely. She didn't come! She sent her servants, but she didn't bother to come!

I'm guessing I should report this as a bug?

Very strange, maybe it's the introduction of her becoming a vampire
and you becoming a vampire realm ? or fight them ?

I'm becoming a capital also, I'll see what happens.

Before that, I had a visit from a "vampire law-giver" into the room of my Countess (that now have become mad due to strange mood).
But I was too scared to talk with him so I killed him before the meeting was started.

Seems your queen is no longer giving a shit about wordly affairs, full-time busy with seeking immortality instead.

Liaison: Hey Your Majesty, let's go migrate to StunkenBurrows, they've gifted me a masterfull cat meat roast[43]!
Urist McKing: Leave me alone mortal, I'm too busy pondering the futility of our tiny lifes!

I'm certain it's unintentional, but this kind of behaviuor seems very cool and fitting to me. I'd not call it a bug.

Another (difficult to verify) possibility that springs to mind is that maybe monarch arrival is bugged if you haven't completed the progression from barony -> count -> duchy. I had a fort once where something similar happened (announcement, guard showed up, but no monarch and no corpse of a monarch), but that was back in 31.25, and I don't remember the rest of the details. So, yes, I've seen it happen, and thought it odd, but didn't really dig into it much back then...

Yeah, I got the monarch from before I even became a duchy - I'm only a barony, as the liason hasn't had time to promote. Yet my popcap is big enough to be a metropolis and I also have lots of gold which I turn into very valuable trade goods, so I had tons extra to offer, so I did. I wasn't actually expecting to get the monarch before going through a full progression.

Hell, I plan to keep playing this fort, so if she shows up after I become a dutchy and then a county (presuming it's even possible now), we'll see if she shows up then!

The real problem is, if this DOES keep the liason from coming, then the promotion might not work, meaning that it pretty much locks you out of the noble chain. Not that it MATTERS much - nobles aren't useful for much yet anyway!

I hate not being able to order stuffs so I've never managed to get monarchy in once I heard that having one around makes liasion gone :D
