The dining hall had been co-opted, and members of the Guard stood at the door, at the makeshift stand wherein was seated the accused criminal, Fimbulwinter, and besides the seat in which sat Patience, the judge for this occasion. Her face was grim, as befitted the situation.

Lodestone and Breccia finally arrive, not really sure what to expect.  There wasn’t much either could contribute, but without anything else as interesting to do they could watch at least.  Hopefully this would end well.  Patience seemed like a reasonable mare.

Fimbulwinter groaned slightly, shifting his weight on a few hooves in order to plant his face in one of his front ones. Patience was hardly the pony he would have prefered to be the judge, and the distinct lack of Spinneret’s presence was starting to wear on him.

He put down any last-ditch “web-the-guards-and-flee” plans when he saw Lodestone arrive. Bugger this, the entire fortress was probably now in the dining hall. Running away and causing...something nasty involving rocks was out of the question when he was surrounded on all sides by ponies, most of whom were bigger than him.

As the dining hall was getting more and more crowded, Dirge decided to just hover above one of the back rows of ponies.

Kat, having needed to take care some business earlier finally made it to the trial. And the whole darn place is already crowded! That doesn’t phase the Batpony however, She just gently pushed ponies aside to make way for her, Afterall, she’s the Commander of the Guards and Militia, it’s her duty to guard everypony. And putting herself between them and the Dangerous Criminal.

Fimbulwinter was wrong. Apparently, his...jailor was just arriving, looking at him like he was caught eating a foal or something. He gives Patience a tired look.

Spinnerette arrives, looking a bit haggard.  She had considered not showing up... but she couldn’t do that to Fimbul.  Her tardiness keeps her from a good seat, but she can still pull up a bit of wall.  She just hopes Fimbul will be alright.

“Fimbulwinter,” began Patience, “you are on trial for the deliberate or accidental inundation of the fort. Please note that your committing the events for which you are on trial is not in doubt. Also note ignorantia iuris non, in this case. In short, the purpose of this trial is not to determine your guilt; that is not in question. This trial is to determine whether the act was accidental or deliberate. Will you enter, for the sake of this court’s record, a plea of accidental or deliberate. Please note that entering a plea of deliberate will prima facie decide the court’s res iudicata as deliberate, and you will face...” She looks directly at Fimbulwinter, and continued “...sentencing. If, however, you plead accidental, you will have a chance to make your case. How do you plead?”

Fimbulwinter curled his small legs close to his sides, and attempted his best puppy-dog face he could. Hopefully, the crowd could be swayed by a pony with a upper body little larger than a foal with the face of a beaten red-haired mule pleading “Accidental,my lordess”.

Patience nods. “Very well,” she says, “then you may make your case. I will decide if it is proof sufficient.”

Fimbulwinter gives a exaggerated shake and quiver, as if the room was as cold as his namesake. “I would like to say that, while I did indeed dig into the water hidden into the rock, I was not the pony who first started that tunnel. Rather, my fellow senior miner, Mal Men, was digging the shaft, but asked for me to finish it as she needed to go elsewere. I....I trusted her enough that I continued to dig into the rock even as I felt wetness from below. I will take my punishment for my misplaced trust, but I refuse to take the blame for a sabatoged attempt on my reputation! “

“Ah, an acceptable defence. Can you prove it?”

Fimbulwinter gazed blankly at the Princess. “I knew where I was. “

He then gives a quick glance to the crowd.

“Actually, where is Mal? Has anypony seen her lately? She never visited me. Did something happen to her?”, he said to nopony in particular, slightly dazed-sounding.

Lodestone gave a small smirk and nod as it looked like Fimbulwinter would be proven innocent after all.  Mal Men’s absence was a bit surprising too.  Perhaps there was something to this.

“Hmmm. Well, I’m sorry, Fimbulwinter, but without that proof, your defence is invalid.”

Fimbulwinter looked sullen. “Surely you understand that I request for Mal to undergo at least a brief questioning. Why, I simply am asking for a single mare, or anypony who remembers that day clearly, about her location during the unfortunate events that happened.”

Fimbulwinter watch’s as the crowd talks and a small smile spreads across his face.

“Please, if anypony knows where she is, speak up.”

Patience snorts. “Fimbulwinter, you should know that absence of evidence for your innocence is evidence against your innocence. And I have no doubt Kat is ready to enact justice in this case.”

Fimbulwinter looks at Patience, and then at Kat, a small smile on his face.
“Surely there is some amount of reason to at least question my fellow miner, no? As the only pony who could stand in this room who could claim to have seen me before the time of the accident, surely it’s reasonable to ask her a few questions?”

Patience shakes her head. “She will be questioned and her own crime - if any - will be investigated following the conclusion of this trial. Do you have any other defence?”

Fimbulwinter gave a little snort.”Please, my dear, live up to your name.” A small gasp of shock filled the hall from many of the onlookers at Fimbulwinter’s impropriety. “And while it is apparent that, considering my plea for a single pony to take the stand has been denied , in fact, I do. For the sake of conforming the...incident was not pre-planned on my part, I wish for my dear Spinneret to take the stand.”

Spinneret almost falls off the wall in surprise, then tries to make her way to the front so she can be heard.  Her mind races as she does, wondering what she could possibly do to help her dear Fimbul.

Fimbulwinter, in a act of boldness, leans over to Spinneret to whisper. “My dear, please, do not be afraid. Just calmly state what you know and how I could simply have not planned this dreadful event, and that, as a member of this fort and the one who is closest to me, you would have reported with great haste about any pre-planned disaster.”

Spinneret blinks and then nods.  She tries to clear her throat before speaking.  “Um... Fimbul couldn’t have planned to flood the food stockpile.  We’ve been spending a lot of time together... I would have noticed something like that.  And if I had... I would have told somepony.  For the greater good.”

Kat snorted and tighten her grip on her crossbow for only just a second. She have been less than amused to how Fimbulwinter have been acting towards her lady. “Are you sure that you’ll notice something like that, Spinneret? I am very sure Fimbulwinter does not normally act as if he’s wanting to be smacked in the head like this and you don’t seems to notice that.”

“Um... pretty sure?”

Fimbulwinter tried to stay calm, but failed in hiding his general disgust at Kat’s words in the form of shooting a hateful glare in her general direction. Neverless, he quickly recomposed himself and gave Spinneret a supporting smile.

Kat narrow her eyes and gave Fimbulwinter dagger stares when he glare in her general direction. A silence warning of ‘tread carefully else you’re getting the whack’

“Very well. Is that all the witnesses you wish to bring, Fimbulwinter?” asked Patience, stony-faced.
Fimbulwinter just responded with a small smile, making a point to let the gathered ponies see him being the one smiling. “Why no, actualy. Giving that the pony that my defense revolves around a pony who is currently missing, and the words of my other witness hold no sway, I myself would like to defend myself, seeing that the only other pony with a connection with the incident has decided to not attend this trial, therefore making any words I myself would say questionable..”

Frankly, Fimbulwinter had no clue if that could be done. But, what the hay, it’s not like the damage has not been done. Mal’s handy vanishing act from the mandatory meeting will bring questions, and with questions bring doubts of guilt.

“Go ahead,” says Patience.

“First and formost, I would like to make note of Mals seeming vanishing act. As the pony who was, as noted before, left her shift early, she not only left me with the responsibility for a faulty tunnel but also with all the blame.”

Fimbulwinter’s eyes widened for a moment, and then he sighed. “But, of course, this defence could only be proven if Mal herself was present, for she is the one who....”

Fimbulwinter gave a exaggerated sniff and attempted to make himself look smaller under Patience’s baleful gaze.

“You know this meeting is optional. Mal is not the only pony absent,” enunciated Patience. “Her absence is no more innately sinister than theirs.”

Kat tapped her hoof impatiently as she watch the trial goes.

Fimbul gave a sigh. “But she is the only other pony who was connected to the event, and one with a viable motive to leave, at that. For the sake of justice, Patience, may I ask of Mal Man has been questioned at all about the events that she can be provably tied too?”

“That is not an affair for this trial. Your continued attempt to stall this trial can and will be noted,” said Patience, a hint of anger beginning to make itself known.

Fimbul’s eye’s widened, and gave a little exaggerated gasp. “But surely a thorough investigation into who was working near there was done prior to this trial?”

Fimbul watched as ponies began to chatter away. He could only hope that it was talk regarding how badly Patience screwed up, and that yes, he should walk out of the room a free stallion.

I mean, that’s how mistrials ended up working in his last home. Frankly, Fimbul has no idea about how the legal system works here. Was there a jury?

“I am the judge here, Fimbulwinter, as you should well know. I know full well the legal procedures that will be undertaken after this trial,” said Patience, with a hint of a snarl. “You do not need to remind me.”

Fimbulwinter just smiled. “Excuse my ignorance, but is that a no? Out of curiosity.”

Again, a wave of chatter. Hopefully, it was of the ponies in the room discussing how he should be free, not about how they will bind his legs together.

Patience forced herself to calm. “If you have no further defence, then this trial is over. Kat, reprocess the prisoner, if you would be so kind.”

“Of course, mi’lady.” Kat said with a respectful nod before walking over to Fimbulwinter, grabbing hold of his chains and lead him away.

Fimbulwinter just kept smiling, to the crowd, to Kat, to Patience, but to Spinner most of all. He let Kat drag him oh-too roughly, making a effort to make it seem like the mare was forcing him to move in so-heavy chains, and Fimbul knew that just from going by the hushed whispers going around in the gathered members of the fort, with some smiles in his general direction and some glares at Kat, he knew that unpopular actions were never inforced for very long.

((Okay. This diary entry will cover only a short amount of time, due to the need to actually put a new update out and the compressed time required. Next update will /hopefully/ be a bit longer, if it can be))

21st Limestone, 310.

Dear diary.

Today the trial of Fimbulwinter was finished.

I have instructed that he should be set free, for I am a merciful pony. Indeed, having heard about his relationship with Spinnerette, I have asked her aside for an hour to talk, mare-to-mare. I have also informed Fimbulwinter that we have found Mal Men and will question her to eliminate any doubt of his innocence.

This will surely be of such good news to all. It is good that the greater good can be served through this decision.

P.S. Kat is such a loyal pony. I thank the greater good for her being selected to aid me.

22nd Limestone, 310

Dear Diary.

Something simply dreadful happened today. You remember I released Fimbulwinter yesterday? Well, as I told you, I told him that we had found Mal Men, and had arranged for a discussion today, to find out what she knew.

She didn't turn up for her meeting, and so we sent out some search parties.

Well, we found Mal Men - Kat did, at least - and she (Mal Men, not Kat) was dead, murdered! And with Fimbulwinter's pick in her back.

He must have killed her to try and keep his story safe, when Spinnerette was with me, to keep her from finding out. Well, he won't get away with it this time!

P.S. - remember to thank Kat for her loyalty.

Later that day -

Dear Diary.

We have decided Fimbulwinter's punishment. He shall be exiled from the fort, and his name and caste shall be removed from him. The out-caste will be sent of a quest of penance. He must visit every temple in the land, begging forgiveness for the ruthless murder of Mal Men.

Even then, I do not wish to accept him back in this fort.

On an unrelated note, we are running out of leather. I will send Kat out to do some hunting.

((Now, pictures of the fort!

- single rooms to the left. On the right is the start of the workshop, then Patience's rooms, coupled with Kat's room on the bottom of Patience's office, and Patience's bookkeeper/manager's office left of Patience's office. Under that is the dining hall. Plan is to make larger bed rooms for the couples after we get a more stable population.

- Farms and food area here. One of our miners is digging out the drainage area for the flooded section. Not much to see here at the moment, but expect a better and more explainable pic after the flood is dealt with.

- this is the cause of the flood, as you can see. My fault, there - accidentally capped part of my water tanks, and the non-sealed part, in particular. You can see the rest of the moat.

- above ground section of the fort. Not much to speak of, and most of the stuff that's up here is as a result of the flooding of the food area.

- Roof of the fort. Still in construction, as you can see. The red stuff is where a bear thief appeared, and didn't live long. At least, I think. It might have been an animal - I didn't see it at the time.

Well, that's about it at the moment.))

Lodestone's Journal - 21st Limestone, 310

The trial for Fimbulwinter was today, and although I've never sat in on a trial before I get the feeling this was a bit unusual.  The tension was pretty thick, which wasn't really surprising, but Fimbulwinter was quite brash in his addressing of our leader.  She didn't seem to be giving him much faith in return, but then I don't really blame her considering the circumstances.  I don't know, maybe I'm just an old stallion who doesn't really know what he's talking about.

In the end, she let him go free, which was the right thing to do.  There really wasn't any evidence to hold him on, and he seems like a decent enough pony.  I guess justice does get done every once in a while.

22nd Limestone, 310

I don't believe it.  I truly and honestly don't believe it.  Fimbulwinter was guilty, and is a murderer on top!

Breccia told me that Kat found Mal Men's body, and that it was indisputable that Fimbulwinter was responsible.  This is terrible.  To think that I wanted this pony to go free, and trusted that he was an upstanding stallion.  Then he goes and does something horrible like this!

Patience has already exiled him for what he's done, and he'd best be thankful I'm not the one who got to choose what happened to him.  If I was Breccia, the next time I was out in the fields I might would go looking for him and put a bolt in that sorry hide of his.

But I'm not, and there's nothing I can do, so I'd best leave it where it is before I get any more upset.

Kat's Diary, Fifth page.

21st Limestone, 310
The Trial of Fimbulwinter was frustrating, that stallion had no respect for our lady at all! I'm surprised that nopony smacked him in the head yet for how he talked and he walked free without incident. I'm surprised I didn't smack him in the head. I'm going to need some drinks, After I go look for Mal Men.

22nd Limestone, 310
I should've shot that fucker the moment I saw him set his hoof onto this fort, he Killed Mal Men! I found the poor mare with his pickaxe stuck right on her back! The strike smashed through her spinal cord and pierced into her heart, the poor mare would've died instantly or at longest a few minutes after bleed out. That Bastard shouldn't have been left alive for murder!

Lady Patience ordered me to go hunt for some Leather today.. I think I know just the leather I'm going to hunt for.

21st Limestone:

Bugger all this. You would think I was a changeling from the looks around the fortress. You know, I need to have a stern talking to with her. Mal, I mean. Kat can break her wings start turning tricks for dimond dog's for all I care.

Gah, I need to see Spinnerete. Oh, I miss her so.

Also of note, diary, is that I saw a strange pony passing by my door late at night. I suspect it's Kat.

Also, there's probably a vampire in the fort. I seem to be the only pony who talks to the yaks around here, and they claim to have been spooked by a pony early last night. There like cows, folks, even if they are lesser than us they provide us food and are far more useful in a pinch than a filthy mud pony.

22nd Limestone:

Worthless vermin! Unholy dragonshites! Mal Man has been killed, and I am being blamed by! How in the name of a Underlord's thousand ballsacks could I have preformed such a horrid crime! I can hardly reach my food bowl in the mornings, let alone jump on a pony twice my size and apparently chisel there way into there spine!

These ponies have no ethics, anyway. I have no intentions on leaving my dear Spinner to these fools, and I know that she will accompany me. There are lands without castes, and the kingdoms below are filled with more...accepting members of our kind. My dearest has already recived my request, and I plan to truly leave the area by nightfall.

Also, Tacticssmile? As a whole?

I hope you dig nice and deep into the earth.

Diary 16

The trial of my dear Fimbul was today.  I was even asked to testify.  A lot of ponies don't seem to like him, seem to think he meant to flood the food storage... but he couldn't have... right?  Either way, he's not been banished.  I guess Lady Patience wants to question Mal Men first?  Oh, and me.  I'm actually about to go and talk with her.  I hope she isn't upset with me...

Diary 17

Lady Patience was every bit the kind and caring leader I knew she was.  We talked about various things, and Fimbul, of course.  It's plain to see she doesn't like him, but she also doesn't want to punish him for something he didn't do.  I'm glad she can set aside her personal feeling about somepony and give fair ruling.

Bugger all this, I am going to hide in the nearest town until they catch the bloodsucker that probably murdered the little brat.

Pity about Spinneret, hopefuly she finds the socks I wove for her.

23rd Limestone - More digging. We've finished the external moat, despite the loss of two miners. The next construction shall be a tomb to honour poor dead Mal Men. We're still trying to prepare the drain for the floodwaters.

26th Limestone - We've recuited another pair of miners. Hopefully this will get the digging done faster.

((Miners are Shewkhefa, weaver, and Lewkes Rewh, Glassmaker))

12th Sandstone - Digging is still proceeding slowly, but a wolf appeared today, and attacked a Partisan mare, Bittersweet. Our hunters killed it, and out of the undergrowth sprang an entire pack. Our militia performed well in killing the beasts. Breccia charged into one, and started bashing its head in with her wooden crossbow. Kat joined her, and the two delivered blow after blow to the wolf. Breccia finally delivered the killing blow, jamming the crossbow through the wolf's skull. Our hunters continued to support them, and brought down another wolf. And last, but not least, Sefah, semingly emboldened by Breccia's demonstration, brought the last wolf down. I have given my commendations to the entire squad, and ordered the production of more bolts, as they seem to not have enough to use.

15th Sandstone - I was too optimistic. Most of the wolves seem to have escaped the initial engagement, and attacked again today. Bekhewan, Safah, and Beraq each killed one, and the militia are mobilising to clear the rest out.

21st Sandstone - Beraq has killed the rest single-hoofedly. A fine soldier.

Breccia's Journal - 26th Limestone

I heard over dinner that Patience has finally settled on two new miners to replace poor Mal Men and the murderous Fimbulwinter.  I don't really know either, but anypony would be an improvement over what we have right now.

I still feel so bad for poor Spinnerette.  The whole fort is in shock over this, but she's been hit worse than most of the rest of us, I fear.  I think perhaps the next time I run into her we should have a little chat so I can see how she's doing.  Not well, I'm sure.

12th Sandstone

I guess I'll never get to live down my reputation as a bloodthirsty marksmare.

My unit was standing guard over the new miners as they toiled away, when a pack of wolves tried to ambush them.  I feel kind of silly for not having my weapon ready to use at such a critical moment, so the only thing I could do was leap upon the nearest wolf and fight it tooth and hoof.  The captain and I managed to subdue it, but not without getting blood everywhere.  Again.

In the chaos of the battling, a few other wolves were brought down, and I'm pleased to say that nopony was hurt in the fight.  That's something at least.

Meanwhile, I tried to pass off my actions as not having enough ammunition to fight with.  I'm hoping that will deflect a bit of the rumors and looks bound to crop up about me again.  It definitely gets me a bit of respect, but it's not the kind I really enjoy.  Lodestone I think takes more offense than even I do, although he's the one who actually hears the things said around the workshops.

21st Sandstone

More wolves.  Just... more wolves.

I'm glad to write that I didn't tear any apart this time.  Beraq did all of that for me.  When the alert went out, it was all I could do to get to the surface.  I had a catch in my hip, and I had to limp my way up there.  At least the fighting was over by then.

I'm heading to bed a bit early tonight.  Lodestone was kind enough to fashion me a waterskin while he was at work today, which he filled with warm water to lay on my aching old bones.  That's going to help so much when I try to sleep tonight, and I'm hoping that I won't be too sore tomorrow.

Sometimes it's easy to forget my old stallion when I'm up out on patrol, but he's so sweet to me.  I should really get him something.  I'm afraid I can't make much, but maybe I could get something made with one of the wolf pelts?  Except he'd be the one to do the work.  Maybe something from their teeth or bones?

I don't know, I'll have to think about it.

Hey, been absent from here for a while, getting caught up.

Clever Cleaver's Journal 15th Malachite

Helped a mother deliver a baby today. She did most of the work. The colt appears a bit undersized for a dratha, not uncommon when they are born to other pony breeds. Colt does seem healthy enough though. Will make frequent check ups to make sure he stays that way, for the near future.

----------------------------------------

Bittersweet's Diary 15th Malachite

Clever helped deliver a foal today. I usually don't get to see him work, but he asked me to help today. Seeing him holding the foal. Seeing the parent's faces. It makes me think, maybe it's time to start our own family. But, he stays so busy with work, and it's so dangerous out here, I'm not sure if we should.

18th Malachite

The whole food stores were flooded! I think we managed to save enough to last for a while, but we still lost a lot. I heard it was Fimbulwinter who broke the wall to the river. Some even say he did on purpose, but I can't fathom why anypony would do that.

---------------------------------------

Clever Cleaver's Journal 8th Limestone

Another pony has been taken by one of these strange urges to create. It is most odd. I seem to recall such stories from some old texts I read in the Stalliongrad Archives, but most of the relevant ones were classified. I would love to study this phenomenon up close, but they keep guards posted, and I can't get close. Maybe if I talk to Lady Patience about it before the next one strikes. Or maybe it'll strike me next! Oh that would be a great opportunity to learn. I wish I knew what triggered it? Pertegah was standing on the wall when it happened, maybe that has something to do with it!

--------------------------------------

Bittersweet's Diary 8th Limestone

Clever is just standing on the wall, when I try to talk to him, he just shoos me away and says he's working on an experiment. I hate it when he does things like this. If he doesn't come down soon, I don't know. Maybe Breccia and Lodestone will help.

--------------------------------------

Clever Cleaver Journal 9th Limestone

No luck on the wall. Stood out there all night. Counted stars, kept getting to 4,578 before losing track. More than I could get in the city! I like it here.

Clever Cleaver's Journal 14th Limestone

Pertegah finished his project. A blowpipe. Very peculiar, not a device he would have had much exposure too before this. I have examined the item and it shows incredible strength for it's material, as if the process has someone imbued it with magical properties. And yet he himself if a winged pony, with no magic. Very strange. I would like to do further tests, but have been unable to acquire permission, for risk of destroying it.

Clever Cleaver's Journal 22nd Limestone, 310

((This page has a few drops of blood on it.))

Grim work today. A miner was found dead, had to preform autopsy. A pickaxe, owned by a recently released prisoner, was imbedded in the spine. Puncture wound was very deep, reaching through the spine and into the organs. Both the wind pipe and a the heart were badly damaged. Brain death likely took a few minutes, but she would have at least blacked out fairly quickly.

Obviously murder. Position and depth of injury and the lay of the body rule out suicide, however contrived. Recommended immediate arrest of owner of the pickaxe, for questioning.

Addendum: Patience has decided to throw due process out the window and exile Fimbulwinter for this murder without a trial. Not so different from Stalliongrad, after all. I hope she has the right pony.

Bittersweet's Diary 12th Sandstone

I was attacked by a wolf today! I can't believe it, I was so terrified all I could do was run. When it bit me in the side, I thought I was done for. I just couldn't stop thinking of all the things I hadn't done yet. And then, those hunters shot it and saved my life. I'm going to see if we have any flour left and if we do I'm going to bake them the biggest cake they've ever seen!

Clever looked at my injuries, he fused over them, and cleaned them and bandaged them, but he says they aren't that bad. He didn't even need to give me any stitches. He didn't go back to his work afterwards though. We spent the rest of the day and night together, just like when we were first married.

Clever Cleaver's Journal 12th Sandstone

Bittersweet was attacked by a wolf today. I feel so stupid. It was my idea to come here, and she gets hurt because of it. Injuries are not sever. Hunters saved her. Must thank them.

Clever Cleaver's Journal 22nd Sandstone

Miss Breccia's condition is obvious. One can no look at the mare without seeing she has trouble just getting around. I have dropped hint after hint for her to visit my office and let me see if I can help her. Perhaps I need to be more forceful. I don't want to force the drugs on her, but I can at least numb the pain in her joints. I'll talk to Bitter, she knows better how to deal with ponies.

Takes place around 22nd Sandstone

Bittersweet was on her lunch break from working in the kitchens, she only had an hour but she intended to make use of it, and so she sets out to find Lodestone at his place of work.  She finds him down in the leather works, examining one of the tanned wolf pelts and making marks on it with a stick of charcoal.  He nods approvingly at his work.

Bittersweet knocks a hoof on the open doorway to announce her presence, “Lodestone?” she says smiling.

The old stallion glances up from his work and meets eyes with her.  A small smile forms on his face too.  “Oh, Bittersweet.  What can I do for you?”

“Well, actually, can you get away for a bit? Maybe join me for lunch? I need to talk to you about something.” she replies.

He quirks an eyebrow and tosses a long silvered strand of his mane out of his face.  “Oh, well, yes, I believe I can do that.  I don’t think anypony would mind overly if I took off a few minutes early.”  He sets the hide down and starts toward her.  “Ladies first.”

Bittersweet leads the way back to the dining hall and acquires some lunch for the two of them. Setting down at the table she begins by asking, “So...how is Breccia?”

Lodestone takes a brief whiff of the food, which smelled heavenly.  “Oh, she’s been about the same lately.  Doing quite well.  How is Clever?”

“Oh he’s fine, he’s been managing to keep busy. However...” Bittersweet pushes her food aside for a moment, “If you’ll forgive my boldness to say so, Clever believes your wife is suffering from some severe aches and pains, but she won’t come to see him about them, is that true?” she asks.

Lodestone pauses halfway toward a mouthful of food, then sits back.  He frowns slightly and looks down into the plate.  “So, you could tell?  It’s not something she likes to really talk about.”

Bittersweet nods, "It isn't exactly hard to tell, Lodestone. My husband says he's dropped hints about her coming to see him if she had any problems. He thinks he's being too subtle, but he is...not a subtle pony, and so I doubt that. He asked me to try and find out more about the situation."

He makes a small chuckle in response.  “That does sound like Breccia.  She’s smart, make no mistake, so I doubt she’s missed his hints.”  His face grows a bit more serious as he adds, “But, she hasn’t told me anything about it.  Again, that sounds a lot like her.  She usually doesn’t say anything even to me about it when her hip hurts, but I suppose it is rather obvious.”  He makes a small shrug.  “After a few decades like this, neither of us pay it that much attention anymore.”

Bittersweet nods, “Were it not for her caste getting her called out to fight all the time, I would tell Clever to mind his business and let her deal with it however she want, but...if it interferes with her ability to defend herself...Well, none of us want what that might cause.”

Lodestone takes a deep breath and nods.  “Yes... yes... believe me, I didn’t sleep well for a while after she was called to duty.”  He half snorts and adds, “Oh, I went and complained about that, since she wouldn’t.  Not that it got us very far.”  He pauses for a second.  “But, in any case, she has seen a doctor in the past about it.  He didn’t seem to think there was much that could be done for her.”

Bittersweet hesitates before responding, “Well, Clever said he need to examine her to make sure, that anything could be done, but he said he had a few things he wanted to tr... er that he thought might help.”

He mulls over the thought briefly.  “Well, I’ll certainly tell Breccia about the offer.  Gods know I wish there was something that could be done for her.  Is there a particular time we should come by for him to take a look?”

Bittersweet shakes her head, “No, anytime during the day is fine, just have her come to his office and he should be there...if she’d rather it be at a different time, after he normally goes home, then she can come to our room whenever, just knock first.”

He smiles.  “Of course.  I think I can talk a little sense into her.  It won’t hurt to have him look, anyway.”

Bittersweet pulls her meal back to her, and says, “Good, I’m glad to hear that. I just hope he can deliver something that actually helps.”

“As do I,” Lodestone replies, letting just a hint of hope slip into his words.

The two ponies finish their meal while chatting about more pleasant subjects then bid farewell and return to their jobs for the rest of the day.

((Later that night))

Lodestone was waiting up that night for Breccia to return home, as he did most nights, jotting down another day’s notes in his journal about his conversation with Bittersweet earlier that day.  He had Breccia’s insulated waterskin hot and ready for her, since he knew she’d be back anytime now.

Sure enough, the door creaks open within a few minutes, and in limps Breccia, holding a hindleg off the ground as she does so.  “I’m home,” she says with a clearly pained tone, and drops her equipment in a free spot on the floor.

Lodestone slips off of the bed, feeling a few vertebra pop in his back as he did so.  Maybe he’d need to see the doctor while Breccia was at it.  He steps over, nuzzles her and the two neck briefly.  “Another long day?”

She nods and sighs.  “It was.  No more wolves have been seen around, at least.”  Her eyes catch the waterskin on the bed, and she nuzzles Lodestone again.  “Oh, bless you for thinking about me.”

“You know I always worry about you when you’re out on duty,” he says, helping her over to the bed.  “Is it any better today?”

“A little.  I think it’ll ease off completely in a day or two.”  Breccia clenches her teeth as she eases into bed.

“I hope so,” Lodestone says, laying the warm waterskin on her hip.  “Actually, maybe you should go see Clever about this?”

She sighs and shakes her head, jostling her white mane all over the pillow.  “And what did the last two doctors say?  Not a thing they can do for it.  Besides, it’ll be fine in a few days.”

“I know, I know, but would it hurt you to see one more?”

“I’d be wasting his time.”

Lodestone lays his head on the pillow next to hers and looks her straight in the eyes.  “Come on, baby, for me?  The last two times you went to see a doctor about it, you weren’t running around with fillies chasing wolves.”

“I don’t know...” she trails off, avoiding his gaze.

He touches his muzzle to hers.  “Please?  For me?”

She lets out an exasperated sigh.  “Alright, you stubborn old stallion.  I’ll go see Dr. Cleaver about it.”

With that, he gives her a final nuzzle.  “Thank you.”

She slides back a bit in the bed, pulls the covers back and gives him a half-cocked smile.  “Now, would you come on to bed?”
