Just noticed that the stuff i traded for like anvil and some metal armour and other stuff does not appear in my inventory - the trading area is empty - and the stuff i traded away is (i think) gone.

I'm beginning to think that somehow i cancelled the trade?  If i check a there is no announcement that trading took place - but i'm not sure there is one - so really not sure whats gone on here.

Any suggestions??

Did you hit o key? That's offering, which gives them for free and happiness. Or your dwarves' hauled everything away to stockpile before everyone cleared out. t key is for trading.

hmmm - can't remember for sure, but i may well have hit offer thinking it meant offer to trade - doh!

oh well, at least they may love me - does that mean i will get cheaper goods (or more varied goods next time?

I'm not sure, but they does sends bigger caravan each year, to a point. It might be enlarged more relative to trader's happiness. They'll also offer more expensive products if they get better returns ( second-hand knowledge here from others' report in past ).

when you trade for some goods, items you bought are not set to trade (you set items to trage via 'g' menu in Trade Depot). And while they are not for trade, they won't show in the list. Just check your depot and stocks for purchase goods - dwarves can haul them away.
