What's your favorite egg-laying animal?
« on: November 13, 2012, 09:00:59 pm »

If you produce eggs in your fort, what is your favorite animal to use and why?

Eggs don't really go bad, but time-to-maturity is an issue if you ever want to use chicks for meat.

How many females do you usually keep as optimal (from my understanding this comes down to FPS issues)?

I tend to favor chickens until I get more prolific breeders like cave crocs. Usually three will lay at a given time if I'm aiming to increase the flock, or just the largest clutch while the rest lay eggs in the unused boxes. I tend to cull poultry that is percieved as inferrior physically.

Geese. I can't be bothered to capture crocs, and turkeys take too long to reach full size.

Children you rescue shouldn't behave like rabid beasts.  I guess your regular companions shouldn't act like rabid beasts either.
I think that's a little more impossible than I'm likely to have time for.

Peafowl, mostly, but I takes turkey sometimes.

As for FPS reason, it depends if you want the most animal ( 48 females 1 male for explosion, around 5-10 multiplier with birds, compared to 2-3 with non-egglaying animals ).

Or if you want constant stream of eggs and creature, then 1 female and 1 male is the least FPS-impacting.

In both cases, you need cages to hold the young birds until they mature enough to give meat :D

Peacocks, because well, cock.  They take a year to mature, lay 7ish eggs at a time.  Soon you'll have hundreds of cocks in your fort.  Beware the cocksplosion.  The first wave of hatchlings comes out just before the first caravan.  So you can butcher the first generation, and cook them and all the eggs, plus some quarry bush leaves.  Bux!  I've had as much as 50K Urist of meals to sell the first autumn.  The second generation matures before the second dwarf caravan.  Butcher 85% of them for more meals.  BUX!

I love cock.

Peacocks.  Just cause it amuses me to have my dwarves tending flocks of them in my mental image.

Dwarves.

Obviously.

Cave crocs are cool too but they tend to kill my fps faster than they kill any enemies.
