what happens if they dual wield candy shields?

Lots of glancing blows off silk hoods and such. Srsly, heavier shields = better shields.

Children you rescue shouldn't behave like rabid beasts.  I guess your regular companions shouldn't act like rabid beasts either.
I think that's a little more impossible than I'm likely to have time for.

Will dwarves dual-wielding shields use only one shield exclusively for attacking or otherwise favor one over the other? Or will they just use the two relatively evenly?

I am a major fan of dual shield wielding dwarves. Tbh they normally live longestin my forts. I yada 7 ye fort where my only dual shield dwarf had roughly 27 noteable kills (which was 10 over my aggressive dwarf). He lived a great life until a Minotaur tripped him and he drowned in a murky lake. I then proceeded to making a slab and a gazebo by his watery grave. I say give it a try to anyone who is interested.

According to Ieb on the last page, they like to use one of the shields for bashing and the other for... shield stuff.

And ye, copper shields are the best available by default for their value as a bludgeon. I suppose that if your dwarves have crap armor user skill and experience a massive slow down in their full steel plate, you could assign them lighter armor (adamantine plate, or less armor overall (no gauntlets, boots, or greaves). Never skimp on shields, though, as losing their melee weapon in the middle of a fight, whilst carrying only an adamantine shield, could put them in a very sticky situation.

The first DF multiplayer fortress I was involved with had a dual-shield monster who absolutely wrecked the goblins. Only real champion in the entire place.

I wish I could give a more accurate answer on that, but unfortunately both of the shields were masterwork, so I never really found out on the combat reports on how much battle-use the shield-hand shield saw. Judging by the single blood spatter on it, a bit?

In my current (Soon to be former) fort, I accidentally assigned an axedwarf two candy shields. I didn't notice until I realized the Danger Room had brought his shield skill to Legendary +5, but his axe skill only to accomplished.  After figuring out the problem, I decided this is an exploit, and deigned not to assign 2 shields to the rest of my military dwarves... But decided to let him keep his shields.

He's now called Siege Breaker, as he's ended 3 sieges single handedly and 4 others with assistance. He's never been so much as injured.

See now, I remember giving characters two shields in the arena and I can remember it being ineffective for some reason. I don't know why I think that.

Very overpowered, but, unfortunately, I'm experiencing my first case of FPS Death. Bleh. I like this fortress.

Each shield not only gets a block roll, but experience gain as well.

Also, copper shields are the best if they're used as weapons as well as protection: copper's high density increases the chance of an attack doing major damage. Compared to, say, a feather wood shield: "... but the attack is deflected by the -rope reed fiber hood-!"
even without armor's i made a 10 vs 10 naked peasent figth with double feather vs double copper and we have 9 copper survivors ... i think it would be same with armors/skills but more test migth be made.
does more then 2 shields can be wielded / is usefull ?

Will dwarves dual-wielding shields use only one shield exclusively for attacking or otherwise favor one over the other? Or will they just use the two relatively evenly?

I took four of my best axedwarves and put them in a shields squad. (Siege came immediately afterward, so they hadn't rustled up their whole sets of armor yet, and sustained some injuries.) But the commander has six kills on one shield and one on the other. There ya go- mostly but not exclusively!

IIRC, even off-hand shield can be used to bash even with fully kitted and weapon-holding dwarves.

I do believe that they'll try to use one exclusively if it's in the right hand to use weapon ( I don't know which, most likely right side and not left judging from my weapon holders ).

I've been testing dual-shield users in the arena, and they seem woefully outmatched given equal skill levels. Shield bashes just don't hit hard enough compared to standard weapons.
I was using iron shields vs axes, for what that's worth. They might compare better to bludgeoning weapons, but probaby not much better as a hammer or mace can at least shatter bones reliably.

wait... is there any reason besides weight not to equip each dwarf with 10 leather shields and watch them own the world?
