Dual-Shielddwarves?
« on: November 13, 2012, 05:29:55 am »

Hi does giving a dwarf 2 shields raise his defense (as in getting two checks for deflection). I think the idea of a heavily armored dwarf with two shields charging at the enemy, bashing his way through them is both hilarious and badass.

I know how to do it, but is this a really bad idea? Did anyone do this? If so what was the result?

I've believed that it was done before, though last time I've heard it discussed was back in 31.xx version. And apparently fairly effective! I don't know how much combat system's changed since then, but shields should still be good at mashing organics up if it's heavy ( copper recommended I heard, or bronze ).

You can test it out in arena mode! :D

Steel shields would be the best if they are used as weapons. If not then wood is actually the best for shields I think, since all shields work the same way but wood is lighter. Wood shields can burn though, I once was attacked by a dragon and the fire burned the shield away.

Leather's better for me for pure protection. Though that's more material accessiblitiy issue than anything for protection since shields are invincible for deflection purpose! And I get too much leather for all the critters I butchers.

I think leather and average wood are roughly same density, but featherwood's the best for sheer lightness, with bluemetal being second

Or third, but the point's there!

I armed one of my soldiers with two shields. Worked pretty well for what combat they saw, although either by chance or way how combat works, they used only one of those shields to actively fight with. Had like 5 kills on the weapon-shield by the time I ended the fort, all from "bashes the head, cracking the skull and tearing the brain!" sort of injuries to various creatures. They also got pretty good shield-using skill from just training, which then helped in combat because that skill is used for blocking and as far as I remember, each shield gets their own defense roll during battle(which is why a lot of adventurers carry a bazillion shields in one hand).

That was my general idea too. If the dwarfs are in a danger room or spar with shield their shield skill should rise really fast (as they are blocking and attacking with it). The danger room should up their shield skill too. So getting them to a high shield level should be fairly easy. After a few sessions they should be able to handle a shield Cpt. America style. Each shield not only gets a block roll, but experience gain as well.

Also, copper shields are the best if they're used as weapons as well as protection: copper's high density increases the chance of an attack doing major damage. Compared to, say, a feather wood shield: "... but the attack is deflected by the -rope reed fiber hood-!"

Children you rescue shouldn't behave like rabid beasts.  I guess your regular companions shouldn't act like rabid beasts either.
I think that's a little more impossible than I'm likely to have time for.

I already see my dwarven taskforce of copperclad dwarfs with two huge copper-shields each. Charging and screaming, only stopping to sip a bit of wine.

Shield skill is only used in defending. Attacking with a shield uses misc. object user.

All my dwarves wear a minimum of three shields besides regular weapons. Even the archers. Shields are easy to make, train armor skill and can be worn without trouble virtually over the entire body. The way I see it: a dwarf needs a shield for each arm, each leg, his/her back and his/her beard.

That sounds like a great idea. Cover the dwarves in shields and watch them hold off truly immense waves of goblin invaders.
