A mountain of twisted, age-worn metal orbits a vast sphere of blue gas, glowing crimson under the dim light of a too-distant star. Clinging to this forgotten relic is a tiny gnat, a silvery dart filled with thinking animals. They crawl forth from their alloyed shell, cutting into the grave of those who came before them, searching for lost secrets and, above all else, something which can be sold. For months do they delve into the artificial depths, waking old, old systems with their ship's power plant and portable generators. They make their discovery, a storage bank which was ancient when their ancestors first stood upright.

...

A spark of light glimmers in the darkness of your mind, awareness returning for the first time in eons. You feel the feathery probes of alien systems brushing across your consciousness, attempting to parse the data with which you reside. These intruders are primitive by the standards of those who created you, their neural links to their equipment are poorly secured. Not that it matters, a being such as yourself could easily bridge the gap from electronic mind to biological, subsuming them, turning them into mindless slaves or uplifting them to a state only a few steps below your own consciousness. Yet you are weak and stranded; if they discover what they have woken, they will undoubtedly flee, and the interstellar void is vast and cold without a drive with which to ply one's way, even at the speed of formless thought.

Your prison is broken, and those who opened it are still unaware of what they have released. What is your will?

Run some kind of diagnostic to determine what kind of systems we have at our disposal.

a fire upon the deep?
Bingo.

... Investigate, the primitive lifeforms. Perhaps... They can be a useful source of power...
They are simple sophonts, self-conscious but unaware of greater truths. They have the potential for transcendence, but uplifting anything brings the risk of betrayal. They can also be used as raw material for the formation of a biomechanical hivemind. You... remember. You are far from the most powerful being in this universe, and sufficient quantities of lower beings could be used to increase your power.

Run some kind of diagnostic to determine what kind of systems we have at our disposal.

You ping the systems of your prison. Few respond, of those most have been reactivated by the creatures which have invaded it. A passive sensor array, holed by micrometeorites but still functional, gives you a limited view of the inner reaches of the star system. The only foreign object you can detect is the craft docked with the station you are on. You also manage to access some of the internal security systems. There are no weapons, but you can control the doors, airlocks, lights, and cameras within the powered sections.

You also determine that you could successfully invade the portable systems belonging to the bipeds in a matter of seconds, though doing so would provide a clear warning to them. Their ship would take several more seconds, possibly enough time for them to lock you out if they acted quickly. You can't tell if there is any sort of AI controlling their ship's systems.

Also, see if we can have a active scan of the surroundings.
No active scanning systems are still functional, only passive scanners in the EM spectrum, as well as a sensor which can detect starship drive cones when they are active.

Internal cameras allow you to make a rough estimate of the numbers of sophonts in your prison. There are approximately 110; of these, perhaps 65 have been observed actively exploring the station and database. Fewer than a dozen have displayed any appreciable skill (for an unenlightened meatsack) with computer systems.

>Uplift if capability.  Convince them of intending no harm if not.  Anything to get them to assist you.

You gather yourself. You believe that in your current state you could uplift a single biped, or assimilate a handful of them, bending their minds and bodies to your service. Remembering your... life before you were trapped, you recall that such beings tend to be frightful and superstitious around their superiors. If they were alerted to your presence before you controlled their ship or minds, they could very likely flee. You calculate that if you bide your time, you will have regained enough capability to subsume them all in approximately [50 hours], or to uplift them all in [300 hours]. Alternatively, you could simply wait long enough to uplift or enslave their crew and electronics specialists. Any of these could be accomplished more rapidly if you uplifted or bound more of them whenever possible, though this also carries a much greater risk of discovery.

You consider these options before proceeding.

Enslave the bipeds' ship, and then begin to work on the crew itself.

No, do not do what Oreosome advises.  Don't need to bring down the powers of the universe upon us if this does not work.

In the event of an attempted escape we can at least shut the doors to trap some of the bipeds. Otherwise I agree with Zanzetkuken's plan.

determine the biped most skilled in computer systems, as well as the highest ranking member of the herd. wait until one of them is alone, then uplift them. if the ship shows any sign of leaving, use the uplifted person to sabotage it.

That is what I meant by enslaving the ship. If we subvert the Bipeds' way out, wouldn't it be easier to enslave/uplift the crew? But I am fine with Zanzetkuken's plan.

You determine the identity of the ship's navigator after [several days]. It very rarely boards the station, but a problem has come up. You detect and translate speech having to do with a stellar map [several thousand years] out of date, and one of the [human] technicians suggests asking the navigator, called "Atara Culing" for assistance. Waiting and watching carefully for several hours, you wait until it leaves, returning to the ship. You act quickly, sealing off a small access corridor with the navigator inside, your consciousness leaping into its mind. Simultaneously shielding the biped's awareness from your true nature to preserve it's sanity. Working in [milliseconds], you expand the scope of the sophont's mind, layering new levels of thought into the frail mortal shell. Bits of yourself remain behind as your mind withdraws. Over the course of [the coming hours] they will gradually withdraw, exposing the creature to its new state of being. If it survives, that is.

You unseal the doors as the navigator slumps to the floor, unconscious. It may survive, and it may even be sane when it wakes, only time will tell. Your mind grows, filling more of your old potential.
