Thibbedi's not always so smart questions-thread
« on: November 12, 2012, 09:15:00 pm »

So hello to all of you!

I Realized, like some of you before me, that I might have a lot of silly and maybe some not so silly questions that I might not be able to find an answer to on my own. So therefore I have also started my own thread for when these seemingly ungoogle-able questions may arise. All I ask of you all is to bear with me for a while :)

So lets start with one.. My Stray Yak Cow (tame) is fighting my other animals in their pen/pasture. Why is this happening? And how do I deal with it? Do I deal with it? So far it hasn't done any damage worth mentioning but you never know what might happen... :/

Over crowding the pasture. Make it bigger or separate the aggressive animal(s) into different pastures. Animals will only fight each other if they are in the same pasture. Animals need a certain amount of grass to feed on so if you need your pasture to be compact you'll have to figure those values out and give the right amount of space to each animal to stop fighting but keep them fed.

If size isn't a concern just making it bigger will work though.

Enough grazing space is one thing, but even starving won't make them attack.

Animals only tolerate being forced to 'lie down' for a short time.  The exact time appears random, but somewhat cumulative in the short term.

So if you have enough animals in a pasture or pen so that not every animal is the only critter in a square, then animals are being forced to spend some time lying down.  The more overcrowded the pasture, the more quickly this limit will be hit, and the more animals affected by it.

You can completely avoid this problem (with non grazers) by giving each one their own 1x1 pasture.... and watch for babies.  Babies get assigned to mom's pen, so if you use this, be sure to move the young away fairly soon after each new birth

(Expect grazers to starve in a 1x1 pen, this method perfectly prevents fights; but does nothing to keep hungry beasts fed.

For grazers. Each pasture will be sized for one of them!

Also, don't assign too many animals to one pasture, they'll decide that the other bugger's in the way and punt at them ( it's worse with grazers since they tries to go to a corner and jam into there to eat ). I like using 1x1 pastures for non-grazers, or designating a strip over nest boxes for birds.

Thank you Imp and AutomataKittay!
That explained it a bit more, the chart helped out a lot!!

I now have another issue.. I've already reached the 2nd year (spring now) the first caravan arrived and left without my lazy dwarfs trading anything, I've gotten two waves of immigrants and still there is no beds!? My dwarfs are just too damn lazy! Don't get me wrong, I know how to create the beds, but no one seems to wanna do the chore.. they prefer other things instead and my original woodcutter that has some novice carpenter skills is apparently easily distracted and so on according to her profile. So far I've managed to create two beds thanks to the butcher who finally helped me out, but I would need some more and I have no one with the skills for a manager job? How can I force my dwarfs to do a specific task?

Dwarves with specific labors enabled will do jobs that these labors allow.  Jobs also tend to have a priority too, so certain jobs tend to be done before others.  Sometimes the dwarf's distance from the job source can be an issue too.

How I would fix your problem:  I would use Dwarf Therapist to create a template for my dwarves that had almost every job enabled.  I would not allow hunting, fishing, or medical work (Like surgery, though feed/water wounded is fine) to anyone without careful thought, but every dwarf can do every other labor (note you cannot both be a woodcutter and a miner, so I usually have a specific number of miners and everyone else defaults to woodcutter (Until and unless they are intended for the military - military dwarves should have both mining and woodcutting turned off to avoid weird equipment conflicts).

So now all my dwarves have all meaningful labors turned on, and as more migrants arrive I can quickly give the new ones the same template.  As I gain specialists through moods or immigration, if I want to have a job done just by someone good at it I can quickly remove the labor from all the others too.

Then, when I say 'make me 5 beds', with or without a manager, those beds get made by someone unless EVERY dwarf I have is busy or somehow trapped so they cannot get to the job - both are very noticable, and whenever I want work done and don't care how good the job is - that work gets done as fast as anyone in the fortress can manage it.

Thanks Imp! Fiddling with their labors helped out a lot! But still my farmers won't brew even if farming and brewing is all they are allowed to do :/ But I hope that's just a temporary thing and that they will start brewing their asses off to save my fortress haha :)

Now to the next thing that keeps bothering me.. I tried to shear some sheep the other day and still I haven't been able to solve how to do it. I keep getting this message about "no animals" or something like that, even if the workshop is placed right next to or even inside the pasture? Could it be that I can only shear a sheep during a certain time of year?

EDIT: And also one of my woodcutters has withdrawn from society and claimed a masons workshop. The thing is that if I use "t" to look at the list of things he needs they are not the same as what he is drawing? For example he is drawing shining metal bars but in the list the closest thing is lots of different stone blocks? And if he is drawing a picture of a "quarry", is that the same as the subterranean bush?

You can take a look at him with (q) to see what he wants. Check the wiki to translate his words into materials. If he's not moving at all, he's missing materials.

If you take a look at a workshop with (t), you basically can just check what's inside the workshop and what material the workshop is made of. If these materials are inside the workshop during a strange mood, it means that dwarf has already claimed that stuff and does not need to collect it anymore.

Yup I Gathered so much from the wiki so far. But that "t" also showed what was stored in and what the workshop was made of was news to me thanks! That was confusing for me at first haha, but so I guess what he needs now is rough gems, cut gems (both already on their way), quarry(i guess i need rock nuts to plant it?), and shiny metal bars (Might not be able to get that in time :( )

This would help with mood demands. Quarry is stone, not the bush :D

Somehow I didn't see that list earlier  :o

Thank you! So does that mean that any type of stone is enough?
