Hello folks.

Ok, so I have my Armory up near the surface with my barracks, and my smelters down at the magma sea. I have all my metalworkers and furnace operators in a burrow so they never stray too far from the sea (two floors basically, one workshops/smelters/stockpiles, the other living/dining).

I am trying to melt down some non-steel weaponry and armor.

The first fail was that the smelters couldn't get up to the armory to pick up the stuff. Then I tried creating a dump near the forges and dumping all the weapons there. However, the smelters wouldn't take forbidden items. I read on the wiki that items set for melting would be "left alone" but the moment I reclaim them guys come down with bins to take them back up to the surface. I don't want to put a weapons/armor stockpile down at the sea because then good weapons may be stored there.

Is there any way around this?

Thanks!

:D
You can get around the problem by having the upper ground stockpile not accept non-steel equipments, under the metal category.

You already have steel equipment for your dwarves? Disable that section and only allow steel and bluemetal.

If you don't have steel equipment, then you could try to abuse the quality, if you already have masterwork equipments in general and only allow the masterwork in the upper pile in both quality sections ( outsider stuff's never masterwork, that I've found ) and have the lower stockpile have the rest of it.

It's a bit complicated, but it's pretty fine detailed stuff too!

Put the stockpile down at the smelters, and customize them not to take the good armors.

Or, create a 1x1 stockpile at the dump site. Dwarves won't put armor there, because the tile already has the dumped armor on it; dwarves won't take the dumped armor away, because it's in a proper stockpile.

Or, leave the armor where it is. It will take longer to melt, but might be less frusturating for someone who isn't acclimated to the stockpile menus.
