I REALLY need help guys!
« on: November 10, 2012, 05:06:34 pm »

Ok guys, so I had a fort of about 10+ years, keep in mind I live on the East Coast where Hurricane Sandy recently hit, and while playing our power went out.  No power for a week, and we finally get it back.  I go to try and play and I can't.  I realize my save is corrupted, and I cannot salvage it.  I try to make a new world, but my DF keeps crashing.  I cannot play Dwarf Fortress anymore, at all!  None of the modes work, and my game crashes when I try to create a new world, no matter what parameters I set for it.  I tried to re-download it, but it still won't work.  Please help!

Sounds more like general computer issues, something broke.

::EDIT::
Check if anything else on your computer isnt running properly first. Other games, other programs etc.

Ok first thing you do, copy your save folder somewhere. You can put that back in alter, if it isnt the problem. Put this on a flash drive.

After this, completely delete dwarf fortress from your computer. Then redownload. See if dwarf fortress works without your old save folder. Then try copying the save folder back over.

If this does not work, you probably have a larger issue. Do a system restore. This will probably even give you back your save, but just in case, you have it on a flash drive.

Other games work, but they crash alot more since the power outage.  I have the save on a flash drive.  I completely deleted and then re-downloaded dwarf fortress, no luck.  I'll try a system restore.

If other stuffs are crashing more, you definitely have system problem, either in the OS or in hardware. Normally I'd recommend buying a cheap new computer, because power network goes to hell during major events and it might've broke your machine a bit. But let's give restore a shot and hope it helps.

The save might still be corrupt if it was saving right during the blackout or the hard drive got hit just right ( or just big enough power surge, but that's unlikely ).

I'll try the restore thing and let you guys know, thanks for the advice.  I'll keep you updated.  If this all works out, all of you who've helped me will have your own characters in the military in my next fort/the fort i'll I had before the power outage.  :)

=O my own military dwarf! Make mine an axedwarf.

Also, do you have your rig on a surge protector? Those are important, It'll prevent you from getting something fried.

Go download Prime95 and run it in torture test over night and see if it hits any errors in the calculation, if so then something is wrong with the processor. Also Memtest86 can do a similar test on RAM. Hope everything turns out well, I know how annoying powersurges and be. Honestly though it sounds like you had a lot of... fun.

System Restore didn't work, i'll try what Captain Man said.   No, I didn't have a surge protector.

You're probably out of luck, unless you have the green for new computer. Games crashing more frequently's usually a syndrome of RAM damage, to me, or HDD breaking down. Or it could be the video card.

It definitely sounds like your RAM got fried when the power cut, probably because you
didn't have a surge protector.

Electricity is a bitch. Always use protection when dealing with the disease riddled streetwalker that is electrical current.

The computer didn't break, something within it did.  I don't think I could collect life insurance.  Like if I lost my foot to a weremosquito, my family couldn't collect life insurance.  Also, i'll check out the ram.  ;)

Time to find a local computer shop and bring it in, I think. They generally have diagnostic tools that may be able to help them find which part is bad and replace it. If you're lucky and it's only one hardware component, you might yet salvage your machine.
