Can magma come up through channels?

As you can tell by the title, I am having some trouble with magma. I was trying to build a few magma smelters, and a made a few channels on the level above the magma. A few seconds after the channel was built magma started leaking through slowly (currently there is magma 1 deep covering the floor around the channels). Is there any way to prevent this?

Sounds like the magma's being pressurized somewhere.

Without some screenshots (ideally a full map screenshot on DF Map Archive), it's difficult to guess what's going on.

There are only two cases where magma will rise up if you channel into it from above.
1)If you pressurize it with a screw pump somewhere then it will attempt to raise to the level of the screw pump. I doubt this is the case since you haven't mentioned a pump anywhere.
2)If you are in a freezing biome then volcanos will have a few levels of obsidian forming a cap over the top. This obsidian "cap" is still counted as part of the volcano, and as such if you dig it out the magma will slowly rise to fill the space where the cap used to be. (Just as how any volcano or magma tube will slowly refill over time). This can be a problem if you have your fortress in the cap when the channeling occurs.

If it's not one of these two occurrences then you should probably make a screenshot so we can help you more.

Thanks for your help, but the magma eventually evaporated and I was able to build a floor to cover the channels, which should prevent any more magma flooding.

No, we actually want some screenshots so we can see what was going on, in case somebody else happens to come along and complain that they're having the same problem...

Sounds like you was channeling right above some magma flow, they sometimes bubble up extra magma if it's not at the highest level.

Not really that odd other than you got a lot more than what I'd expect/experienced.
