Couple (?Hundred?) Questions.
« on: November 09, 2012, 05:37:39 pm »

Okay guys, well i'm new to dwarf fortress and i have a couple questions. I'd be grateful if you guys could answer them. Oh, and if you guys don't mind, i'll be posting more questions over time. If you can, will you guys keep checking back and answering them periodically? If you can, thanks.

Edit: I know about the wiki, and i have used it for many things. But sometimes the wiki isn't detailed on certain things. Like question 3 here.

P.S: I'll be leaving old questions here that have been answered with (Solved) beside them, in case somebody else wanted to see the answer.

P.S.S: Should i include answers as well with solved questions to help other people? Just thinking about helping others y'know.

1st off - (Important)  I'm having trouble understanding the military's alert and schedule screens. I understand they work together alot and are apparently useless without each other or close to it, but i just can't really figure them out so they "understand" each other and work. Oh, and i'm wanting to establish a training program as well as a "panic alert" for civilians and a "defend the entrance" for the military. I just need a Brief explanation on this cooperation.

2nd, Can hunters not reclaim their bolts? One of my hunters killed a kangaroo early on in my fort's life...but he missed a lot A ENORMOUS AMOUNT in the process. (Solved)

3rd, How long would it be before my dwarf's clothes start falling off their skin and i have to make new ones? (Solved)

Old 4th question:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Edit 4th Question: Then what is the point in training weapons? Is it just so you have a cheap weapon that is only used incase you don't have enough regular weapons?

More to come... Maybe....

You need the wiki.

There is a section on setting up the alerts and schedules which would do a better job for you than I could on said wiki.

Fired bolts can be reclaimed if they survive being shot. Do this either by hovering over them with k and hitting f, or in the stocks menu.

Clothing will start showing wear from between one year to 18 months IIRC.

You can have dwarves automatically reclaim spent ammunition by setting orders [ o ] going to forbid [F] and telling them to claim ammunition [p].

speaking of ammunition. Brief thread hijack here for a sec.

My dorf pooped out an artifact bow. Not a crossbow. A bow.

Can I, uh. Ever make ammunition for it, or is it useless?

Sparring injuries are from an old version.  No problem if you're playing 34.xx

You can't make arrows.  You can buy arrows from elves and humans.

I would like to point out that since the falling rewrite wrestling sparring is kinda dangerous again due to dwarves that are thrown skidding along walls and floors and taking (potentially fatal) damage. Sparring with weapons is completely safe though.

It would be brutally difficult and probably won't work. In other words, it's absolutely dwarven!

As for why there are training weapons...
Well, a few reasons come to mind:
1. They are cheap and unlimited if you have a tree farm.
2. Weapon traps that aren't as lethal for your danger rooms(They can still kill with lucky shots, always wear helmets).
3. Less lethal beating from your hammerer(Can you get prisoners to wear helmets? not sure about that).
4. Fighting elves with wood was never more Fun!

If you're quick enough, or is dealing with tantrum spiral, you can assign them to squads without activating them and assign helmets. Might have to set replace clothing and give them proper outfit since caps blocks proper helms.

Even bone helms seems to work, at least for danger rooms. I expect leather to, too, but I always have more bones than leather :D

In the old days sparring was equivalent to real combat, leading to many modders making harmless "training" weapons. Toady eventually incorporated that idea into the actual game, however shortly afterwards he made sparring harmless with any weapons. As such you can think of them as a relic back from the days when sparring was dangerous.

It's also hillarious to make a Goblin Grinder, but load up the hall with loads of 10-Trainingspear weapon traps.
