Knee injury.
« on: November 08, 2012, 11:54:00 pm »

So I've got a hopefully non-serious knee injury- one of the tendons pulled or tore or something, but it dosen't hurt so much.

It's a real bitch to get around on crutches, or sit down, or get anywhere without a lot of leg room. I've been using a cane, but it's hard to get around and not put pressure on my leg. I'm going to be stuck in one place a lot and I don't have anything to read.

Good ways to keep from going stir crazy? It'll be at least 3 days.

If you are looking for something good to read (that is also free), Baen Books has a number of selections available online. I'd recommend the Honor Harrington series, the first of which can be found here:

Otherwise, try and find something interesting to watch on TV, Youtube, or Netflix/Hulu/Amazon Prime if you have that. If you have some sort of mobile gaming device (or phone), I'm sure there are some relatively cheap apps or games you could boot up.

For your injury, remember RICE. Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation. Hopefully you'll feel better soon.

Be more careful to avoid arrows in the future.

It's not easy to dodge invisible ninja arrows.

I wound up playing Halo 4 for... ever. Forever. All day. To be fair, I woke up pretty late but still.

You could try this game people talk about. DF. It's said to be great fun.

And yes, RICE. Knee injuries must always be treated seriously. Even if it doesn't hurt now. Get well soon.

Mine tore while I was standing around in english class.

I think it tore, I don't know what it did to be honest.

How on earth?
I am trying to think of a situation where english class could hurt your knee. Except for trying to read the Canterbury tales in one go, and mistaking the Knights Who Slay Knees with some other celebreties in full metal armor, I really can't think of anything. Hmm, perhaps dropping Moby Dick on it would cause tears.

Supposedly, "sometimes people's ACL just does that."

I'm never talking with the school nurse ever again. I bet she thinks pixies are stealing all her meds.

Have you recently done an unusual workout or physical activity? I once played a ton of games of basketball in a row, and then the next day, I could barely bend my knees. Thought I had really messed something up, but it got better after a day or so and some Motrin.

But more details please.

Like, no. I'm not in tune with anything not completely "HEY, I'M RIGHT FUCKING HERE" so maybe it was being stiff from sitting all day plus carrying a fuckton of weight around (because I don't use my locker, I just carry everything, and I'm not exactly thin either), but that day I really didn't do like, anything. I'm just talking with this guy who's normally like, annoying, but is actually being cool, after like a day of testing, and then take one normal step and WHAM HELLO FLOOR I'D LIKE YOU TO MEET PAIN

Sleeping w/o the brace because it's making the skin raw. Should be OK, but I'm not moving that knee much. It just feels like, weak, and bending it much more than 45 degrees seems like a STUPID idea which I'm not trying.

But yeah. Probably a mix of random unnoticed leg injury plus strain plus stiffness from a whole fucking day of sitting and testing, but I felt like nothing strange up until it decided to pop. It made a big pop sound too- I don't know if it tore because it honestly didn't hurt that much- pulled maybe. That sure as hell didn't mean I could walk. I'm totally sure it was the ACL though.

Well sucks for you hope you have a nice Phyiscal Therapist, but the poping sound isn't much of a worry till it starts moving around.

..you really need to see a doctor.. Knees don't go boom from sitting too much. If I spent all day putting pressure on my knees at wrestling practice, and then someone took a bad shot during a match the next day, that might blast my knee. Either right then or within the next month. Or like one of the others said, getting hit by two linemen and a linebacker (ouch btw. I used to play football too :D) may be cause for at least some pain. But too much testing? Eh. :-\ Do you play any sports, even casually (at the park or in the street with friends)? Or maybe there was some other seemingly innocuous incident that you hand-waved that could have started you on the way to injury? I've heard of some outlandish shit happening before but nothing nearly as innocent as this. It could be anything really. Dropping a few feet and landing incorrectly, even stumbling too hard can damage your knees significantly over time, and with consecutive incidents. It happens a lot with dancers and any other activity that requires repetitive motion (ever heard of carpal tunnel syndrome? same thing  ;)).

Not that I can think of. In fact, I've been recently trying to get back into doing things like that, I've been a bit of a slug for a month and a half.
Biggest thing I can think of would be NJROTC drill, but we weren't doing anything too strenuous, ever, and I've been doing it for more than a year.

I really can't think of anything.
