I can't pay kickstarter in that format.

Also I left that decription in for people reading this.

I see. I'll ask the Coles about Paypal options.

I don't think he can really change that. I am just someone who can't aid Kickstarter.

Hopefully, there will be a Paypal option for those who cannot pledge through Kickstarter's Amazon Payments, so that could be an option for you.

Regardless of whether you pledge, there are still plenty of ways to support the campaign. Spreading the word to friends and communities that might be interested in this kind of game is one way. Some people write blog posts or tweet about it or share it on social media. Some people spread it through forums, gaming and tech websites, blogs, podcasts. Hell, I might even put an ad out myself in the local newspaper if it comes down to that. The Coles have estimated that one million people have played the Quest for Glory games. If just 1% of them hear about this project and like it enough to pledge, that's 10,000 backers. But this million people are all over the world and its hard to reach all of them, especially beyond the English-speaking part of the internet, so every bit of publicity helps.

This game intrigues me, at a glance it seems like a more indepth Magical Diary. I'll keep an eye on it until I decide if I want to pledge or not.

Having never played Magical Diary or Academagia myself, but I can kind of see the similarities (school setting, social interaction emphasis, day cycle time management). What did you like about those games?

Mostly them being different to what I usually play, a breath of fresh air if you will. Hard to say exactly what it is but the whole social interaction thing is something you don't usually get from a game so that is always a nice thing, at least if the characters actually have some depth.

Definitely agree with you. We want characters that have depth, that we can have an emotional connection to. Not sure if you ever played the QFG games but they had some of the most memorable characters, especially the villains and their henchmen. People really really liked Katrina's characterization in QFG4. QFG5 also pioneered relationship options in the west (they were more common in JRPGs) before black isle and bioware made it popular. The Coles want to have a more in depth dialogue system in Hero-U too:

Quote
Classic Sierra and LucasArts adventures mostly used dialogue menus. The game presented you with a choice of dialogue options, then gave you the other characters' responses. Sometimes there were puzzles or important clues hidden within the dialogue tree. In order to be less frustrating, most games allowed you to try every possible line of dialogue until you got the important one.

That was better than previous games, in which your only option was to "talk to" a character, and they always gave the same response. But it's nothing like a real conversation. Real people don't patiently play along while you ask them, "What is your name? What is your quest? What is your favorite color?" Unless maybe you're on a first date and you're buying.

In Quest for Glory, we multiplied our work (and hopefully added to the players' fun) by adding "cases" to dialogue based on the game state. If you met a person for the first time, they had one set of responses. If you came back later, they would have another. If you rescued them from a burning house, later conversations would focus on that connection between the two of you.

We are using an even more subtle conversation system in Hero-U. You will have several choices of things to say, each of which leads to a conversation. The difference is that it doesn't go back to the starting point. Your choice determines where the conversation leads, and you can't act as though the words were never said.

In addition, the state of your relationship with the other character will sometimes affect the choices you have available. It will definitely affect the other character's reaction.

We are, of course, insane – This approach will multiply the already-huge amount of dialogue Lori wrote for the last few Quest for Glory games. But she's willing to try, and I expect I'll help out between my other design tasks. Our goal is to create believable conversations, while still keeping the player in control. Your dialogue choices will matter much more than in a classic adventure game, because everything you say can and will be used against you.

Conversation and character relationships matter very much to Lori and me. You could say that, for her, they are the most important part of any of our games. We promise that you will have some fun and meaningful discussions when you play the game.

I had not played the old Quest for Glory series but I went on GoG to get them yesterday. Seems to be neat, only played a bit of the first one so far but I am liking the feeling and what seems to be a lot of hidden stuff to figure out, I do have to say though that the combat system is one of the worst ones of any RPG I have played, old or new, sheesh does it feel clumsy and unintuitive :p But combat does not seem to be the main part of the games so if I can just figure out how to not get slaughtered from doing too little damage or dieing from exhaustion from trying to do any at all I will likely enjoy it.

EDIT: Woo managed to kill a goblin :p

EDIT2: Fuck those hobos with spear and shield...

You're not the only one who feels that way. Frustrations with the arcade-like RT combat system was one of the motivations for the switch to auto-resolve in QFG4 (pick a style, let the AI work) and now the turn-based, more tabletop like approach in Hero-U. But there are also fans who preferred the (one of the five) old arcade style. Can't please everyone..

Yeah I must say turn based would have been a better solution in my opinion, the real time thing feels... twitchy. None the less I have played pretty much all day now and have gotten fairly proficient at it, enough so that it doesn't annoy me too much. Which is great because damn how can I not have played these in my childhood, I went through tons of rpg's and adventure games, from Lands of Lore to Grim Fandango and loads of titles like that but this one I missed.
The fact that you can import your character between the games is just the cream and strawberries on an already full plate of cream and strawberries.

So, based on the Quest for Glory games I will pledge to Hero U. Sadly the pessimist in me sees that it has a long way to go in just ten days.

Guess so, with an Anglicized name though

If I had more inclination one thing I could have done is a Letsplay of Quest for Glory to sort of show people why the series is so great.

One thing I always liked about playing the mage is how logical it ultimately is

"Hmm something is strange about this room... Detect magic!"

It is one of the few games out there that actually makes observation worthwhile and obvious so to speak. You arn't trying to arcane knowledge about whether or not what you are looking at is important. You can find out yourself.

There are quite a few LPs of the series out there.
