Start on ice
« on: November 08, 2012, 03:52:30 pm »

Just had a Fun start with my dwarfs starting out on a frozen river intersection in a canyon. Quickly dug out a hall and started hauling everything there, but the river thawed halfway in and 3 dwarfs drowned and half my supplies. I guess on a start like this you immediately need to haul everything out of the canyon onto dry land?

That's right. Or you wait until next winter and dig it out again.

I wonder if the game has become odd.

Not in the river, you don't.

Rivers have flow. Your shit is probably off the map.

Abandon reclaim? :o

River won't move the stuff very far, lacking pressure gradient. Flow only really matters for purpose of spreading contaimants and water power, IIRC.

Ice's like obsidian, a lot of stuffs get destroyed when things freezes over :D

I think metal stuff are safe for most part, though, as long as you digs into it the first chance you gets. Probably other stuffs, but I've not dealt with ice in a long time.

Had a similar start again last night. Apparently the odds are quite high on 'canyon' style maps. Got all my stuff inside on time, now I need to find a place to get wood. Up is an aquifier but I suppose breachgin that from below must actually be quite easy as I can drain the water into the river?

Actually, I guess I could actually leave one part of the aquifier open and generate some mist next to my main staircase, something like

Top:

   A
  W#W
 WXXXW
A#XXX#A
 WXXXW
 WW#WW
   A

Side:

           X
           X
           X
fortress---X
           X~~~
               River

(W=wall, X=stair, #=grate, A='open' aquifier)

Yeah, breaching aquifers from below is always easier. Without exception. Haha. Reminds me of the time I tried to dig a floodgate into my aquifer during winter, when it was frozen. I made the hole too big for it to freeze.

Careful, because level below the main aquifier will leak water down from it :D

Breaching from below would work fine since you can drain it out of the fortress.

You can dig out objects that are frozen in ice, but if it thaws, everything gets destroyed.
